New Conroe build, no OC, which cooler?

Hi,

I'm planning on building a new Conroe E6600 system in the next few days once I get all the parts. I would like to make the system as quiet as possible. I don't plan on overclocking initially, though it might be something I'm open to doing later on. I've read that the stock HSF might be too noisy, so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommnendations for coolers that I can use. I'll be using an Antec Solo case, possibly on an Asus P5B board. So far I've looked at coolers like the Zalman 9500, Scythe Samurai-Z, Thermaltake Silent 775 or Jungle512, Thermalright MST-9775 (haven't found review of this one yet), etc, but I don't know if these would be overkill for me. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

It looks like the Ninja is popular I had seen it but I thought it might also be overkill because it looks big. I like the idea of a passive cooler, but then do I need to add more fans in the front and back of the case to keep the temperature low? If so, wouldn't this be noisier?

jimmyj68, I looked at your other post, thanks. At least I know that the Ninja fits in the solo. You also mention the Scythe Mine. Is this another good option?

The Ninja doesn't need excessive airflow for great passive performance. The Scythe Mine has denser fins and will most likely require active cooling.

So if I get the Ninja, do you think I'll need some fans in the front of the case? How do I know if I need them? Sorry, I'm a newbie at this.

BTW, I can only find the Ninja Plus (SCNJ-1000P) for sale. I found it at newegg for $34.99. Seems like it's the same as the Ninja but includes the optional fan, right?

Any other suggestions from anyone?

Not to steal your thread, but I'd love to hear what case fans you're planning to buy. I am also about to build a E6600 machine in a Solo box!

http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wis...cWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=3373345

That's my current build and I plan to make the purchase monday. That's everything but the graphics card which I will buy locally and the cpu which i have on pre-order elsewhere.

again, sorry to side track the thread, just curious about your case fan choices.

Exhaust fans are more important than intake fans, especially when you're using a fanless CPU HS. The Ninja Plus is basically the Ninja with a fan (a pretty good one, to boot). You can find it cheaper at Jab-tech.

Zalman CNPS-9500AT; it uses a 4-pin PWM fan that will dynamically adjust itself according to CPU temp.

Wow. The Ninja can keep the CPU at a decent temperature without a fan? Even with cpus at full load?

OMG!!! I never thought I would say this...

It seems like you're partial to the Scythe Mine 3 [pronounced ME-nay] -- at least you expressed interest in it.

I'm running one on my 3.0GHz P4 Northwood right now, which runs a lot hotter than your 'Connie', and it's holding its' own, now that I polished the sink and applied Sycthe MX-1.

I've had a love-hate relationship with this thing! It's got the worst 478 mount I've ever seen, but I guess I'm getting used to it, now that I've reinstalled it a couple of times.

Anyway, and again I can't believe I'm saying this, but it would probably be a good HSF for you. The 775 mount actually looks pretty nice. It's fairly light-weight for a twin tower. The fan is integrated in the design (and easily replaced & upgraded). It looks nice -- not kludgey like the (sorry!) Ninja+ -- it doesn't take up a lot of real estate inside your case, and it's MAD quiet!

Heh! There, I said it! I feel so nuch better now!

If you're not OC'ing the stock HSF will be perfectly fine. Enable Q-fan in the BIOS to keep the noise down.

If you don't want to go that route then get Ninja for a passive solution.

If you want active then go Mine, Big Typhoon, Tuniq Tower or Zalman 9500.

Do I need to worry about the weight of the Ninja? It weighs 815g with the fan! Isn't that above the Intel specs? Do I need to worry about that?

If it turns out that I need to run the Ninja with the fan, am I better off with the Zalman 9500 (at 530g)?

No. If you want a fan then get the Mine. It's better then the Ninja Plus. (Ninja is best used as a passive cooler)

Still waiting to hear why, besides the "paper clip mounting".

Mine and Ninja Plus perform identical:

However Mine is better because of:
1. Better socket 775 mounting system. (don't have to access the back of the MB)
2. Superior fan mounting arrangement

Scythe FAQs even say that Mine is designed for active and Ninja for passive.

I personally think the Mine with an optional YL 120mm fan is about the best HSF arrangements out there and would challenge a Tuniq Tower with less size and weight..

Well put, Henny!

I think you hit the nail (pronounced 'nah-EL') on the head!

Agreed.

Disagree. Why?

The data from Scythe is there. You need to click on Mine vs Ninja plus to see the chart. (couldn't link to it directly)

I discount the silentpc review because it's so different from the tons of other reviews which show the two within a couple degrees of each other. (including data from the manufacturer)

Like I said, the OP would be fine with any of these since he doesn't plan to OC his E6600.
