This is the way I brought my first new car.

1. Go to www.cardirect.com got a price for whatever car you want.

2.
3.
4. Print the offer and go to the largest dealer in town, ask them to beat it.

I brought my new car within half an hour.

dishonest? Car dealer? sounds like fair game.

Actually. Depending on what kind of car you are trying to buy (in demand or not) really makes the world of difference on the pricing versus invoice price.

dealer invoice is like 3-4% profit included to the dealer.

a corolla, much unwanted vehicle, probably has $1K+ in factory incentives (kickbacks) to sell

However something cool, likely you are going to pay invoice or more

Which corolla is this?

If dealer agrees, it prob isn't that good a deal, sorry.

Remember, you didn't do anything to force him to sell. He wanted to sell you a car. Never forget holdback. That's one hell of a difference. Believe it is bout 3%, so even the corolla LE invoice minus holdback should be even less.

Minus holdback, (on a new delievered model, no floor charges yet) the dealer still got a substantial bit of money off you.

Ooooh. Dishonest, but i'm sure it would work.

If you don't have a conscience, go for it! (Then again, think how many people have been ripped off by a car dealer in the past by paying MSRP!)

If you are Canadian and need an e-tailer of cars, try Cars4U to get a "modifyiable" Canadian price. I wouldn't get too carried away with this, though. A dealer will know that you fudged it if it is like 3000 below invoice. Do some research first, and at least let the car dealer make a few bucks on the car.

um...this is all assuming they don't check up on the cooked ad
you bring in...what keeps them from looking on the web to
verify your ad? then what?

i dunno, i realize car dealers are scoundrels, but this...
hm, this hits the borderline. theoretically, you could do
this with anybody's ad for any product, provided the vendor
is not web-savvy or just plain stupid. but where does that
leave you?

business in bad faith if you ask me.

Even with a coupla options, the wholesale price shouldn't be over 12k, include auto trans. Also, check manufacturing date, lotta those models been around a while. make sure odometer hasn't been changed, dealers I know, many do this, especially on demos. Its illegal, but its very hard to catch. Make sure the dash hasn't been pulled.

When it comes to car purchasing, the mentality of "anything goes" should be at the forefront of your mind. I know some might not want to hear it or believe it but 99.999% of the dealerships out there will try to screw you. It's their jobs, that's how they make their money. An informed buyer is a smart buyer. Playing dealerships off each other is completely fair game - some even thrive at doing so to screw each of their fellow dealerships.

Any car salesman speaking honestly will completely admit to that.

As far as this particular case, the dealership didn't have to accept or beat the price. I know many that just say, "I'll wait for the next sucker, please move along now."

Check out "life of a car salesman" on Edmunds. I'd say that it's pretty accurate.

I paid over $14,200 for a corolla...:|

If the dealer is willing to give you the $12,000 price, that means he is still making money. Car dealers are not Staples/OD/OMX, they don't have to price-match.

Actually - car dealers are very similar to the infamous price match and will usually beat or match any legit price you show them. MOST reputable car dealers are aware and/or have a salesman/manager on site who already deals directly with cars direct. A HUGE plus when buying a car using cars direct is you don't have to haggle for the price [just like buying a car at Saturn].

Is your price below window price? I got my Accord SE around $300 below window price. It was listed $18.6K, $20K something for MSRP and I got it for $18.3K and $19.8 out the door. The saleman give me free tinted windows too ($300 value).

I really hate Toyota dealer when I help my g/f to buy her Camry. They adjust the price depend on how much you put down. Different with Honda dealer, all price are the same even you put down $1. When you buy a car from them, never finance from them, try to finance from your bank. B/c they will give you high rate even your rate is actually lower. They may adjust the price if you don't finance from them too. This is also different with Honda, they don't care where you get the money from.

My next car will be Honda again.

This isn't dishonesty...I mean, you aren't trying to rip off the dealer. If the dealer doesn't agree to your price, then he doens't have to sell, and no one suffers. On the other hand, if you can get the car at lower then what the dealer asked for to begin with, you got yourself a good deal.
