New CPU cooler, temps OK?

I have been running a Xigmatex 92mm fan/heatsink on my Q9300 running at 3.5ghz. According to RealTemp, idle was in the high 50s, load about 71 C. I've been doing a lot of folding, so I wanted to keep my CPU cool while doing SMP work units, so I bought a Thermaltake Frio.

Difficult install, because my case has no cutout behind the mobo. I used AS 5 and both fans in a push/pull config. Anyway, it's all back in there now, and temps have dropped about 8 degrees C across the board (idle around 49 C, load around 63 C). I'm using RealTemp in Windows 7.

I was expecting something more, I guess. Is that the kind of drop you'd expect between those two coolers? I'm asking because I'm afraid I did something wrong on the install and will have to pull it out to find the problem.

I dont have any experience with the Frio HSF, but the look of it, it should provide better cooling than the Xigmatek 92.....I would do a reinstall. Maybe the base is not flush with the CPU ? How much AS5 did you put on ? Too much AS5 is a bad thing.

Also, what kind of case is this in ?

I used a few dots of AS 5 and spread it around the top of the CPU so it was all covered, then stuck the cooler on. So it's a pretty thin layer. And this is in a CM 690, with the Frio fans blowing from front to back of the case, right into a 12MM exhaust fan on the back of the case.

Don't get me wrong, the cooling has improved, but i'm wondering if 8 degrees C is about the right amount of improvement.

Yeah, that case has great airflow. Maybe you just need to let the AS5 cure a little bit....

I've always wondered about that 'settle down' time. Is that with periods of being off and on? Because I tend to leave my PC running all the time.

63c for a Q9300 @ 3,5GHz under load is so damn good temp. You haven't got anything to worry about. That temp is great...

On and off. Has to fully heat, then given time to cool off completely. Rinse and repeat. Shut ur comp off at night, should be fine.

Your question is semilar to mine. I just upgraded my 4 yr old pc. Just replaced cpu and mb with i7-870 LGA1156 and GA-P55-UD3. And I just install the supplied Intel Stock CPU Cooler. All other components are old and reuse. Even my PSU is only 380watts.
At no load temp=44*,40*,45*,39* average. At 80% load crunching Rosetta@home projects, the average Temp=60*,58*,62*,63*. I am tight on budget so I do not buy other expensive cpu cooler. If this is an acceptable operating temperature, others maybe able to accept this economical component configuration.
Please tell me or advise me if this is OK. I AM JUST AS CONCERNED AS AL YOU GUYS. THANKS A LOT

You should try reapplying the AS5 by following the directions on their site. I applied it like you did before (spread it with my finger) but I got overheat warnings, after I reapplied by following their directions my temps were normal. Also, make sure there is good contact between the heatsink and cpu.
