New CPU Hell

Ok,

Here's the deal- I'm running the following:

P-4 2.4C
Intel 865 PERLLK mobo
Zalman 7000 Al "flower" heatsink
1GB DDR400
1x 36GB Raptor
1x 100GB WD 8mb
1x 120GB WD 8mb
ATI 9800 Pro
Antec Sonata/ w 380W Truepower
NEC 3500 DVD-RW
Floppy, card reader, etc.

On Thursday, my new P-4 3.0C from Ebay came in- I swapped CPUs that evening. When I was taking out the old one it was stuck to the heatsink so strongly that when I pulled it up the CPU came out of the socket, stuck to it. I detached it, cleaned both heatsink and CPU with isoproyl alcohol, inserted the new CPU, added AS 5, and put the heatsink back on.

After a day and a half of random slowdowns, one hard crash, and numerous occasions where the computer froze for a second or two, I took the computer out this morning, checked and rewired every connection, and re-inserted the old CPU. Now the bootup is still very slow (compared to before the 3.0 arrived and I changed CPUs) but general file browsing and photos are much faster.

I've had this computer for two years so I'm fairly sure the RAM is good. I'm just wondering- are these problems caused by the new CPU itself or did I somehow damage the CPU socket when I took the old one out?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Zak

was it new, retail in a shrinkwrapped box with intel seals intact?

If not it may have been overclocked, overvolted, and cooked before they sold it to you.

That's more likely than you damaging the socket, though you may have damged the old P4 2. (check the pins)

No, it was used- I suppose overclocking is the probable answer.

I've put the old P-4 2.4 back in and it works perfectly now, so I'm guessing it and the processor socket are fine. Was quite worried there.

Sounds like they sold you a bad chip

FYI, the people selling CPUs in the FS/FT forum here are usually more trustworthy than eBayers, they'll usually tell you if the chip has been overclocked if you ask them.

Also sounds a bit like throttling. What kind of temps are you getting in the motherboard bios?

I put a WTB ad up in the FS/FT forum with no responses

Both the mobo sensor and my hardware sensor showed the CPU to be around 29-33C.

Well you seem to have done good for yourself in isolating the problem. I'd recommend putting it in again and quickly checking the temps so you have something to go by when you try to return it.

looks like a bad chip unfortuantely.

on another note, regarding your thread in fs/ft, next time you want to "bump" your thread every 4+ hours to keep the post on the front pages. it looks like you only got 18 views and no-one replied/bumped for you so it probably slipped away after a half a day.

As an owner of an Intel Motherboard Myself (D815EEA2U), I have experienced this before when tring to test out some celerons to see if they are in good working order. I have three things that I recomend you do:

[*] Insert the old CPU and go to Intel's website to make sure that you have the latest bios.
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts...s=all&ProductID=949&OSFullName=Windows

[*] Go in to the BIOS Setup and Clear All Plug and Play Info (PnP) (worded something similar to that). Then open the case and remove the cmos jumper then power on the pc for 30 seconds (30 is for good measure) then turn off the PC and set the jumper to the Configuration mode (do not turn on the PC yet).

[*] After Completeing the previous two steps Insert the New Hardware (Memory, Graphics Card, or CPU), in this case the 3.0ghz chip. Now you can power on the computer and the BIOS Setup should automaticly appear (as a result of the jumper being in the config mode). Go through all of the menu settings (including the advaced options that avalable only when the jumper is in this position) and set them acordingly. After all has been set save and exit these settings. Now you can shut off the PC and return the CMOS Jumper to the Normal posistion. USUALY this works but If not I have another method I will share with you later.

Intel Boards are very picky about changes to the system hardware, all configurations are automatic with little user intervention possible; therefore it is very important to reset the motherboard before any changes are to be made to the system so the bios will go through it's autodect process like it did the first time when the computer was assembled.

Also cleaing a CPU or GPU with isoproyl alcohol is never a good IDEA, because drug store (70%) isoproyl alcohol contains OILS that when heated can fry electrical components. Always use 100% isoproyl alcohol alcohol avalable through specialy shops (Can be tough to find localy). I have Found It before on Froogle.google.com
http://www.precisionroller.com/find/*Tech+Aids*+S5530+.htm

Or you can use a product from Artic Silver specialy designed for cleaning old paste from CPU's.

assuming that the old chip you have isn't HT Enabled.
is the new chip you purchased HT enabled ? Did you enable it ? If you did disable it.

I probably should have bumped- don't know why it didn't occur to me! Thanks for the tip

To Googer: I checked the BIOS when rebooting and it saw the new chip as 2999 Mhz, so I'm guessing that shouldn't have been the problem. When you say I set the CMOS jumper to configuration, do you mean changing a hardware jumper on the board itself, or just taking the battery out for 30 seconds?

Isekii: Both chips are HT enabled- why should I disable it? The old one works perfectly with HT enabled.

did you ask the guy why he was selling the CPU, If I had a 3 Ghz CPU I wouldn't sell it.

Woot: I can't overclock on an Intel mobo!

I know it's not a huge upgrade per se, but this board could only take 3.2 max, and it was impossible finding one of those. It won't take Prescotts, and my budget doesn't run to a new setup for a while yet. I figured it'd be a nifty boost in Photoshop :/

The guy who sold it seems to run a computer store. I might try some of the suggestions listed above about resetting the CMOS if you guys think they make sense, but I really doubt it would help- the board saw it as 3ghz, does that mean it's likely to do hard crashes? Never heard of a CPU upgrade causing that.

Getting a new mobo would mean a new CPU, new RAM and a new video card. I can just live with this 2.4 at the moment.
