To OP: You have waited this long, two more months won't kill you. If you will be upgrading, might as well upgrade to the latest and greatest. Better yet, wait for two months until all the cores and boards have been beta-tested (by the early adopters), then decide which one and jump on it.

Fair point - I'll probably hold out a little while. I do have a birthday on the 9th April, so possibly in time.

Regarding 7 instalations, would MS void my license when I upgraded if I were to install it on my current PC (perhaps with a little extra ram) to last me until IB?

Edit: Would the Freezer 7 Pro fit on the LGA1155 socket for the i5/IB or would I have to upgrade/use stock?

Don't bother, you're getting a stick of DDR2 for 2 months at most. Unless you're planning to use your old PC as a secondary. Check your heatsink manual, if there is support for LGA1156, you can reuse it for LGA1155.

No intention of using the old one as a secondary, although I do still have the old graphics card. I'll have a think about that.

Not sure my manual will help (if I could find it) - I purchased this one when the C2D was first released, so 2006(?) I think. Is the stock Intel one good enough for a slight overclock should I want to, or would I be needing to upgrade if I wanted to do anything other than stock?

A week ago I was holding off for IB, then my i5 760 up and died, so I went with the 2500K. Come to think of it I believe I bought the i5 760 just a few months before SB was released. Timing has never been my strong point. I don't think that either choice, waiting for IB, or just picking up a SB now, is a life altering decision, but as others have said its not the long of a wait so unless you current CPU up and dies, you might as well hold off.

Thanks again. Is there any way of finding out whether the mount has changed between the Freezer 7 Original and the v2?

i dont understand these arguments ... annyway, as ivey may be a better overclocker you may be looking at a net ~20% improvement over sandy .. other than that, no reason for waiting.
(did they fix the virtualization extentions in the current stepping of SB ?)

I thought about upgrading. I'm still on a Athlon 2500+ XP Barton chip. Main reason I'm waiting is because Ivybrige will be more efficient.

Definitely wait.

Although I'm waiting for Haswell, but I'm running a Q9550 (at 3.6) so not much of a reason to upgrade yet.

If we don't *need* a CPU now, what's a month going to hurt? The only cost for that +20% improvement is your patience

Hey,

I'm planning on upgrading my machine - a first gen E6600 just doesn't cut it any more. I'm thinking the following:

i5 2500k
Asus P8Z68-V LX
8GB Corsair Vengence DDR3

Any suggestions/modifications/known issues with the above? I've currently got a 530W Tagan PSU which is running fine and a HD4870. I will be running Windows 7 Professional and using it mostly for gaming, perhaps some audio editing.

Thanks in advance.

Why is your e6600 not cutting it anymore? - when does it show?

This is a cpu forum, so all the geeks will say playing bf3 you will be handicapped by anything slower than a Intel 2400, while not commenting on your gpu

In this forum, being slowed down by your cpu in a game, gives far, far worse minimum framerate than the minimum framerate generated by a gpu. They can just feel the cpu pain

Times have passed since the e6600. Its painfull for these guys to realise the cpu only plays an utterly insignificant part of the performance for 99% of the users.

Read this as positive news, there is plenty to save here on the cpu side. If you are gaming, save some doe for a new midrange gfx. IB is uninteresting, but wait to se what NV have planned for the new 104. That can change the total budget.

And remember to save for a ssd. If you want office speed, all you need in your current setup is a ssd. Period. And it let you into the maps faster - it means winning...thats worth paying for

This close to a die shrink, I'm going to wait just for the tech aspect of getting a 22nm cpu. I wouldn't mind one of the new z77 boards that are touting wifi/blue tooth/ sata III / USB 3, but one with all that and 2 x8 slots might be pricey.
I also like the sabertooth , just for it's looks to be honest

Man, in my youth we used to overclock the 386 by changing the crystal on the motherboard, where can we do that now? - its like modern cars wrapped in plastic, not like the old rear weel volvos where you could just stand next to the engine adding a new turbo controller.

Clearly, there is pcb space for at least one DVI output. That little fan in the center *cough*

Atrocious design, imo. I'll pass.

Why in the world do you say that about the design? That is actually an excellent design for cooling the board and components. The shroud around the board will allow air to be forced to move across the PCB. High end server boards have been using this for years to ensure proper cooling and prolong board life.

Raise funds waiting for IB -> More choices available across Mobos/CPUs/GPUs after IVB release -> Best possible option now available -> No regret.

I am in the same situation, I am waiting for Ivy bridge. The speed on my old computer still isn't bad, so I don't have NEED to upgrade. Thus might as well wait another month and see what we end up with.
