New CR2032 batteries, are these OK?

I'm down to my last CR2032 Lithium battery, stored in my fridge for 10 years now, from a 6 pack I bought off ebay (from Asia) in Mar. 2010.

So, I go to Ebay a few days ago and buy a set of 10 Panasonic CF2032 Lithium cells, "**FRESHLY NEW**, "made in Indonesia." I get them today. I test them with my quality Fluke multimeter and the 4 or so I randomly tested by poking through the card were ~3.20v. The 10 year old one in my fridge tests the same as when it was new at 3.34v. The one that came in the chest strap heart rate monitor I received today tests at 3.36v or so.

So I'm wondering if I should make an ebay complaint that these "FRESHLY NEW" Panasonic batteries are substandard.

The cards say PD 10/2019, ED 09/2029, so doesn't look like they've been sitting around. But it seems to me that Panasonic CR2032 should test higher than 3.20v. Am I right?

With the way eBay works you should always just complain anyway. Free stuff even if it's perfect and the seller can't do anything about it.

Duh, well, I do have my scruples. I only complain when I have a legitimate gripe. You know, karma and all. The other day, my device stopped working OK and it's CR2032 cell showed ~3.00v. So, I'm wondering if I can legitimately assert that these 10 batteries would give substandard service starting out at only 3.20v. Anyone?

Well honestly they were advertised as "fresh" not "fully charged".
Might be hard to argue a faulty 3v battery when it reads 3.2v though (most people don't get it).

Could be knockoffs, factory duds, and/or likely stored improperly leading to reduced charge.

Perhaps find a small resistor and hook it up between the battery/meter and see what load voltage looks like.

Probably counterfeit, but not worth fighting. Just use them.
Na, I'll complain, get my refund, toss these and get the real thing. Using crap batteries is more trouble than it's worth even if they are free. Devices stop working properly, it's just hassles I don't need.

What do you use them for? I think the only things I have are motherboards, my keyfob, and I think ram cards for the 48gx use that size(haven't changed one in awhile).

I just bought a heart rate monitor that uses them. They other day I replaced one in something that escapes my mind right now. It was 3.00v on my meter, but it didn't work anymore. I probably have 3-4 things that use them. I think I have thermometers/etc. devices that use them.

Where are you gonna get them next? Why are you wearing a heart rate monitor?

People use heart rate monitors when they work out, when they run, there are a lot of uses for a heart rate monitor!
My Chronic care manager told me to never scrimp on quality batteries for my medical devices!!
Good luck!!

So I can see how I'm doing in my aerobic exercises. My heart is fine, they tell me, I want to keep it fine. Blood pressure too.

Seller today sends me this message, 2 days before ebay will step in if requested:

"Hello, Sorry to hear that you are having an issue with your batteries. Let me ask you, do you by any chance have a battery tester? If so, do you mind sending me a picture of the readings that you are getting so that we may forward to our supplier? Please advice. "

I looked around and don't have a dedicated battery tester. Poking around online I see that hooking up a multimeter to have a ~100ohm load when testing will give a better idea of the quality of the batteries, but my local indy electronics supply store is closed Tuesdays, so can't buy one today. So, I sent the seller this message:

I do not have a dedicated battery tester, however such a device would only tell me if a cell is capable of supplying the power to run a device. It won't tell me for how long it will continue to so perform. A CR2032 cell that initially supplies only 3.20 volts is going to very much under perform a cell that initially supplies 3.34 volts. My Fluke multimeter is top notch. The "Panasonic" cells you provided me are very likely "knock-offs" and if used will fail quite prematurely. If you have more, test them yourself.

Is the heart monitor battery rechargeable? I ask because the rechargeable CR2032 batteries (should be RCR2032) have a higher voltage spec than the non-rechargeables.

No, it comes with a CR2032.

I think at least 3.34. I have a CR2032 I bought from Asia in 2010 that reads that with the same mulitimeter. So, a new set should read at least that... I think.

Just use the multimeter

I did. Several. But I figure it won't hurt to get a 100ohm resister that I can use now and in the future to test batteries under load. It was so shown in a youtube video I watched today.

Take a look at the Energizer CR2032 product data sheet. (150kb download) Notice the pulse characteristics chart, they use 100Ω load to test the cell for 2 seconds. The depleted 2032 cells that I've tested will measure 3V open circuit, but drop drastically when loaded with a 100Ω resistor. You can't really check the state of charge of these cells using open circuit voltage, you need to load them.

You can make a short jumper with alligator clips at each end and a 100Ω resistor in the middle. If you take one alligator clip from this load jumper and clip it to the positive probe of your multimeter and the other alligator clip to the negative probe you can test the voltage of a 2032 cell under load.

I saw just that demonstrated today in a Youtube video and I was prepared to bicycle to my local indy electronics supply store where they have everything. Almost out the door I thought to myself that they might be closed and I should check (happened to me before I got there and "Closed" was on the door). I checked their website and sure enough, closed Sunday and Tuesday. I wouldn't have sent the seller that message if I'd had a chance to test the cells. Well, I wasn't sure the test would be conclusive, but I was going to do it before answering the seller. Thing is, tomorrow I'm busy, so it won't be until Thursday, Feb. 6 that I'll be able to test. That's the date that I can and maybe will ask ebay to step in. I guess there's no hurry, I can still ask for intervention until early March. Eh, it all seems a little silly over $4, but it's partly the principle of the thing. I am glad to be learning something in the process, though. I looked around to see if I had a resistor but didn't find one.

Now, the Youtube video I saw was with a AA cell. Not sure you can do the exact same test with a CR2032.

Well, seller accepted my return, sent me shipping label. So, will send back to Brooklyn. May not even test with the resistor (which I haven't got yet). I didn't remove them from packaging but did have to jab a tiny hole in the side of the 4 or so cells I tested to get the probes on the + side. Maybe not noticeable if you're not looking for them.
