#1 is Lincoln

W is 36 out of 42. It might be interesting to see W's relative position a decade or two from now.

Without thinking a whole lot....I'd probably pick Teddy Roosevelt as my favorite.

It's a little early for that isn't it? Don't get me wrong, I voted for him and I want him to succeed but he's got huge problems to fix.

What What, GWB has not gone to the bottom of the list yet, well give it some time, I am sure he can displace Buchanan given a little more time and greater perspective.

Doesnt surprise me. Many people probably long for the boom of the 90's
Also presidents tend to do better as time goes on and we can view their policies in a less emotional light. Truman when he left offices was considered a disaster. 50 years later many consider him a fairly good\strong president.

James K. Polk is #12?
Who the hell is he and what did he do that was memorable?

I don't remember anything about James Polk from my US history classes in middle/high school.

Shameless self-promotion?

James K. Polk Lyrics

Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Factory Showroom

In 1844, the Democrats were split
The three nominees for the presidential candidate
Were Martin Van Buren, a former president and an abolitionist
James Buchanan, a moderate
Louis Cass, a general and expansionist
From Nashville came a dark horse riding up
He was James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

Austere, severe, he held few people dear
His oratory filled his foes with fear
The factions soon agreed
He's just the man we need
To bring about victory
Fulfill our manifest destiny
And annex the land the Mexicans command
And when the votes were cast the winner was
Mister James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

In four short years he met his every goal
He seized the whole southwest from Mexico
Made sure the tarriffs fell
And made the English sell the Oregon territory
He built an independent treasury
Having done all this he sought no second term
But precious few have mourned the passing of
Mister James K. Polk, our eleventh president
Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump

Its sad but, that song is the reason I know anything about James K Polk....

*tear*

Sounds like a good guy, funny I've never heard of him either. Maybe doing exactly what you promise doesn't make you famous?

if not for vietnam, he would probably be top 5. Very controversial president though with lots of historical context of his times missing: the civil rights acts, the great society, and vietnam, and all three of these can greatly polarize lots of people to not like him.

You're right, W does have some room to go lower. Good point.

Liberal historians. Truman had a 20% approval yet gets high marks in 'public persuasion'.

I dont think it is just liberal Historians. I view Truman as a strong president who made very tough decisions for our country that I agree with.

ya gotta remember this is winnar, take anything he says with a grain of salt. If it's lib/dem, it's automatic bash time.

As this recession/depression sets in, Bushes rating will go down. He was kinda like Nero, he watched as the country crumbled around him.

No, I believe Harry Truman was a true patriot, something that is no longer found in today's Democratic party. He never would have released our enemies from Guantanemo.

That said, these categories are rather meaningless; if a man with 20% approval (in his time) can get a top ranking in 'public persuation', what exactly does that category mean?

It is hard not to give the man some respect when you look at historical statistics on poverty.
