Biggest gainer over the previous list was Clinton, up 6 places from 21st to 15th.

Doesnt surprise me. Many people probably long for the boom of the 90's
Also presidents tend to do better as time goes on and we can view their policies in a less emotional light. Truman when he left offices was considered a disaster. 50 years later many consider him a fairly good\strong president.

Yeah, but Truman actually had significant accomplishments when he had left office...I'm not sure if GWB even has that type of potential because he doesn't have much that could possibly look good in the future...except maybe if somehow Iraq completely turns around...

Liberal historians. Truman had a 20% approval yet gets high marks in 'public persuasion'.

I dont think it is just liberal Historians. I view Truman as a strong president who made very tough decisions for our country that I agree with.

ya gotta remember this is winnar, take anything he says with a grain of salt. If it's lib/dem, it's automatic bash time.

As this recession/depression sets in, Bushes rating will go down. He was kinda like Nero, he watched as the country crumbled around him.

No, I believe Harry Truman was a true patriot, something that is no longer found in today's Democratic party. He never would have released our enemies from Guantanemo.

That said, these categories are rather meaningless; if a man with 20% approval (in his time) can get a top ranking in 'public persuation', what exactly does that category mean?

Real patriots uphold the rights that our forefathers fought to defend. Truman was doing something similar, I guess we can call what he did as a means to "Protect and defend the constitution of the United States" or something to that effect. I distinctly remember him taking an oath to do so, or at least that is what my grandparents told me. Even convicted terrorists (which these guys aren't...yet...) have rights given to them by their creator, etc. etc. etc.....

LBJ is way too high on that list.

It is hard not to give the man some respect when you look at historical statistics on poverty.
Poverty rates were dropping before he took office.

So? That doesn't refute that his programs drastically reduced poverty. If that is what you are getting at, then you need more to back up that claim.

In this case, even though the economy started tanking before Obama took office we might as well lay that on him.

Who the hell is he and what did he do that was memorable?

I don't remember anything about James Polk from my US history classes in middle/high school.

I just read the wiki entry for him. He did quite alot.

Yeah, but how was he a better president than Andrew Jackson?

Obama should be in the top 10 by 2012; top 5 by 2016.

A bit early to call for a President with no accomplishments.

He needs to fix the economy, salvage America's reputation around the world, fix public education, fix healthcare, fix social security, mend the racial divide, and sure as hell hope nothing bad comes out of the now destabilized Middle East and Eastern Europe (from GW's policies).

I think he's probably got to be one of the hardest presidents to rank. He took huge steps for civil rights, but completely fucked up on Vietnam.

That's why he used military tribunals and executed the Nazis, right?

Not to mention internment camps.
