New Dell LCDs soon?

So I was pissed that EB canceled my XBOX, so to vent I went to go look at 2405FPW prices to add to my collection. Low and behold, the whole current generation monitors are dissapearing from their site (including 2405FPW, 2005FPW).

Anyone else notice this?

Well, if they are closing them out, I hope they clear out the 2405 for $500.

#1. This is not entirely uncommon. I have noticed this happen before. It is a little unusual in that I don't think there are any mega deals on the monitors right now... Or maybe its just a natural JIT supply hiccup.

#2. It makes sense that starting in 2006, Dell will want to have monitors that are "Vista Compatible". I am pretty sure that means you have to have a HDCP input port. To my knowledge no Dell Monitor has a HDCP port...so maybe they are planning on new revisions instead of just slapping HDCP ports into the old designs?

Ahh, yeah, that all makes sense Keeir. They definitely used to have a much shorter period on them.

Since Gateway has a 21" widescreen with HDCP, I bet they are going to have updated Dell models at some point that have it like you mention. At least I hope so, since I often plug my 2005fpw into a HD Cable box currently and the DVI would be nice.

When I ordered mine a couple of months ago the delivery time was 3 weeks. I think it just reflects inventory and demand changes.

Dell is revamping their product lines and pushing xps everything... They are still working out the new deals with samsung (who makes most of their monitors and tvs). Expect to see lots of changes in the next month or so.

These wouldn't have anything to do with that recently announced new line of Samsungs would it? I've read the specs/press releases on those and I'm rather impressed. I may have to get one of the new 24"ers as a secondary.

Aren't all the new samsung panels PVA? I'd rather have IPS (2005fpw uses S-IPS by LG Phillips). Too bad LG Phillips' page only mentions a new 23" widescreen panel coming, no mention of a new 20" one.

what is the difference between PVA and IPS?

Syntax has a S-IPS 26" that could be found for less than $700. I'm using the LT26HVE right now and I like it

umm there are some really good write ups floating around

basic difference
IPS sacrifices a little viewing angle, a little black level (and thus constrast) for better reponse performance

PVA (and S-PVA) that have faster reaction times than IPS are due to an electronic trick of overdrive which can leave artifacts.

Some people prefer the response of IPS to PVA regardless of actually response time

Actually S-IPS panels give the best viewing angles. All Eizo ColorEdge monitors use them (flatpanels.dk confirms this). I'm pretty certain S-IPS delivers the best/most accurate colors. You could say S-PVA is a compromise between the two (S-IPS and TN), though delivers better contrast than either for what it's worth.

As for advantages, the IPS technology has always been better than TN+Film in terms of color reproduction and viewing angles. In fact, S-IPS matrices leave no chance to other LCD technologies in the color-reproduction quality. They have soft and pleasant colors, which are natural and close to high-quality CRT monitors. That?s why all LCD monitors for professional work with color are based on S-IPS matrices, starting from relatively inexpensive to hi-end models of the Eizo ColorEdge series with integrated tools for custom hardware color-calibration.
