the upgrades are expensive

i want at least the 2 ghz processor, the 256 mb video, 2gb ram (i guess i could get some at at newegg), and a few other options. puts it over $1k

I'd mainly be using it for gaming. the $600 price I could possibly justify, but not $1k+

2gb RAM from newegg is $79 for PNY brand or $90 for corsair, geil, etc, so it's very worth it to install that upgrade yourself. (plus you can try to sell the 512MB sodimm that the system will ship with by default).

To make this a viable gaming laptop, I'd
- buy the $79 2x1gb ram at newegg,
- get the overpriced 2.0Ghz CPU upgrade for $245
- get the reasonable 8600M GT 256MB gpu upgrade for +$199
- get the $100 SXGA+ screen option (for higher resolution)
- add the FREE Creative Earbud EP630 (under travel accessories)
- select "No Microsoft Office"
- select "No Anti-Virus/ Security Software" (install avg antivirus and a free firewall yourself)
- personally I'd select the 3Yr Ltd Warranty and Next Business Day On-Site Svc for +$169
- keep the free "Automated PC TuneUp" and "DellNetwork Assistant 1.7" (hey, they might be cool )

Totals include newegg price ram but do not include potential money from selling the 512MB sodimm:

Total with 1 year mail in warranty: $1,172
Total with 1 year on-site warranty: $1,211
Total with 3 year on-site service: $1,341

You would always have to run games still at lower resolutions though.

exactly, way too much for me to justify right now.

I prefer running at native with no AA. Luckily I don't play demanding games... WoW is the most demanding (read: only) game I play

My dream laptop...does anyone make one for a less than $1500 price range?

Core 2 2.0ghz+
2GB RAM
8600M GT or GeForce Go 7700 (they're about the same right?)
1680x1050 or 1920x1200
DVI or HDMI OUT
5.5 pounds MAX

Strangely enough - and I'm NOT a mac guy - the Mac Book Pro has been the closest I've seen to this. I"ve seen some other more recently tho - Asus A8J comes to mind.

Would this be a good laptop for a student?

Also, what is wireless N? Is that worth it?

For a student, it will be solid. I'd get the complete care warranty if you can.

Immortal1- I'd get the 8600M, 2 GB of ram, and the biggest hard drive you can afford. And just make sure you have a Core 2 Duo and you should be fine.

The 8600M GT upgrade is with DDR2 ram, thus the memory bandwidth is going to be lacking in this card. It is still a GOOD card, no doubt, but don't expect it to be on par with the 8600M GT in the asus laptop. With DDR2 it is likely 800-900Mhz memory, unlike the DDR3 varient that is clocked at 1400Mhz. Just keep in mind...

This laptop is a GREAT deal... I am VERY close to ordering one and giving mine away to my mother... Very close...

Just recommend one to a family member...

Would this default 599 setup work well w/ vista basic for word processing, internet, pictures (just digital camera use, not editing or anything), and DVD movies? I told her to go for it, because none of that is very hardware intensive, but then I realized I don't know how it will run Vista basic as I've never used Vista...

Will she be okay? Or should I tell her to cancel and get something else? I can upgrade the RAM to 2GB easy enough if that's the only issue, it's the 128MB vid card I'm worried about. Will that be okay with Vista and what she wants to do (definitely no gaming)?

the vid card is perfectly fine for those usages, in fact it should be able to handle light gaming as well.
