but look at how the Video card makers copy the car makers even to the Suffixes ...
GT ... GTX ... XL .. XT ... limited .... and AMD names their upcoming CPU after the great races ...

i guess you're waiting for Al Gore's "really Green" GPUs
:Q

This march towards bigger screens (using more power) to get the benefit of using more power is old school. Time for the computer geeks to wake up and understand real world science. Not too conversant of Al Gore, but "An Inconvenient Truth" is interesting. He did seem to do alot of flying though. Anyways I am sure if the industry works on using less power - less power will be used. I am still shocked to read that vista uses more power than xp at idle. These guys are living in the past and best get onside before finding themselves out.

boring! we want faster PCs and bigger displays!

Yeah right..then why not show the benchmarks now to head off all those emergency orders NV is making for their chips cause they can't keep up with demand? Not to mention record profits. Remember, like Intel did to with conroe 6 months before launch and had people holding off their X2 purchases. I'll believe it when i see it..ATI has been months late and frames short for too long for me to believe they smoke anything besides hashish...probably accounting for their tardiness.

Software Tweaks kinda makes me think of the return of driver cheats, they'd better not pull any stunts like that again.

ATI & AMD need to start proving their claims (Barcelona & R600) before i'll buy into the rumours/marketing.

*SW tweaks* probably means their drivers are mature

i doubt we'll see deliberate *cheating* ... it is too easy to expose and tends to *bite* the cheater

and yes ... it is *critical* [imo] for both r600 and [especially] Barcelona to *prove* themselves

if not ... it's intel and nvidia ...

just intel and nvidia

Personally I would take games that tax the current displays, but each to his own. Besides faster pc's and bigger displays should be doable in a sustainable manner. If not - they will soon be taxed to oblivion by greenhouse cleanup initiatives. Companies that get a head start will be well situated.

personally, i'm looking forward to a fully functional holodeck like the Enterprise, 2nd gen

but i guess that would be *multiplayer*

advances in neural-cyber interface links could make making SP gaming requirements *self powered*

wtf is up with fuad's annoying insistance of referring to ati as "DAAMIT"?

not only is annoying how he overuses his 'pet' name, but it really makes him look rather stupid (not that he ever came off as overly intelligent in the first place).

I hate it when people use DAAMIT thinking its a clever way to combine AMD/ATI.

I imagine eventually the ATI will go away and everyone will just say AMD. You know like NVI3DFXIA

*several* of us came up with this 'oh so obvious' anagram simultaneously ... theInq ran with it .... otoh, "marchitecture" is all theirs [although they may not have been 'first']

it's a *merge* of letters ... not an *acquisition*

DAAMiT !

clever is fine, it's when they're not, but they think they are

i can live with 'marchitecture'. while it's not a word and doesn't really belong (not as if it's something entirely new and we're looking for a word to describe it) , it's not entirely idiotic. it at least references what he is describing, whereas using 'DAMMIT' will leave most people entirely clueless as to what he is referring to without further explanation.

and are you trying to set a record for the no. of '*'s in each post lately?

ATI's R600 driver indicates four flavours ahead

"R600" = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9402
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9403
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9400
"R600 " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9401

DAAMIT is still uncomfortable using any names due the leaking problems and each of these cards has its driver, for secondary display. We don?t know the difference between the cards, uet.

One industry source implied a possible XTX, XT, PRO and GT branding, but we cannot confirm this. This bit puzzles us.

[ati2mtag_R600.GeneralConfigData]
MaximumDeviceMemoryConfiguration=512
MaximumNumberOfDevices=4

There are two possibilities. The first is that each card supports 512MB of memory only and that you can Crossfire up to four cards. The second is that the card has four different memory devices and can address up to 2GB of memory. We still don?t know the answer but will tell you when we do.

"R600 Secondary" = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9421
"R600 Secondary " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9422
"R600 Secondary " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9423
"R600 Secondary " = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_9420

The cards are about a month away from a public announcement.

now that's *speculation*

thought you'd want to know

oh yeah ...

ATI RV610 and R630 to launch in April

Mainstream and low end DX10 are shapping up

...

Nvidia will beat [DAAMiT] with its G86 and G84 launch but we heard that AMD plans to introduce the mainstream R610 and entry level RV630 in April. This will roughly take place a month after the original R600 launch. Give or take a week or two, more likely give.

Those will be crippled versions of the original R600 design, but they will be good for Vista and DirectX 10 and that?s what AMD desperately needs. Despite the April launch, mass availability is expected in May 2007. This is still not that bad as at least AMD will be there well ahead of the back to school period.

The R630 will bring the AMD's DirectX 10 to the sub $100 market and this is exactly what AMD sales need.

They forgot option3: Each card is actually two cards slapped together with 512mb on each "card", so 1 GB total in one "device". How's that for speculation?

Like GX2 style?

Could make sense, but what amount the power usage, crossfire limitations, and the overall cost. (2 PCBs, 2 GPU and lots of memory chips for 512bit memory interface)

While I also doubt "the" r600 is a gx2-style card, I wouldn't completely dismiss the possibility of some similar variant appearing later on. Last I checked, Crossfire now has a default AFR rendering mode, so that would reduce the typical limitations of Crossfire as far as dual gpu configurations go.
