You act like fasting is like a drug tolerance.

I feel great when I fast for a day. Two days not so much. But damn do you also feel great when you eat.
I didnt say two days was too much. I've done two weeks myself. I'm saying that on and off fasting every other day makes your metabolism slow. It's the way nature deals with "Times o' plenty." Durr.

Care to back up that claim with some evidence?

cool whip diet:

eat 1 tub of cool whip for each meal, 3 times a day. along with a multivitamin

only 1800 calories so you will always be losing a little weight if you exercise

plus all that delicious cool whip!

This is genius. Now go on Dr. Oz

i've heard that too low a body fat % is actually harmful. not sure what the number is, but i'm pretty sure 4% is in the dangerous region.

Yeah, he cycles for competitions. He considers himself "fat" at 8% when he's not prepping for a show. Dude is a monster. 12 meals a day & works as a personal trainer. Pretty great setup if fitness is your hobby!

calorie expenditure > calorie intake.

can't beat the laws of thermodynamics.

Well, truth be told, it's a bit more complex than that. Here's a good starter article:

http://authoritynutrition.com/debunking-the-calorie-myth/

For example, on the fruit diet, I literally eat twice as many calories of fruit as I did on meat/veggies (ex. 2000 calories meat/veggies vs. 4000 calories fruit). Same amount of sleep, exercise, etc., just double the amount of caloric intake because the type of fuel inputted is different. And that's only one aspect of it!

The biggest issue with health and weight loss is there is just too much contradicting information. Some say one thing is good for you some say another is good for you some say it's bad for you... Screw it, I'll just order a poutine and pizza damnit!

That's the thing...we just don't have enough solid information yet. We have some information, but not all of the information we need to make 100% recommendations. Plus we have crazy-strong lobby systems in the U.S. that blocks information & allows stuff like GRAS crap into our system. Anywya, there's a really good talk on TED about Centurians: (people who live to 100+)

http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_buettner_how_to_live_to_be_100

They published a book called "Blue Zones" about the 9 elements they identified as contributing to long life based on their data collection:

1. Move naturally. Don't do marathons or pump iron; work around the house, garden, walk, cycle, walk when talking on the phone.
2. Know your purpose. Have a reason for waking up in the morning.
3. Kick back. Find ways to shed stress, whether it's praying, napping or going to happy hour.
4. Eat less. Stop eating when you are 80% full.
5. Eat less meat. Beans are a cornerstone of most centenarians' diets.
6. Drink in moderation. Only the Seventh-day Adventists in California didn't have one to two glasses a day.
7. Have faith. Denomination doesn't seem to matter, but attending faith-based services (4 times a month) does.
8. Power of love.
Put families first, including committing to a partner and keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby.
9. Stay social. Build a social network that supports healthy behaviors.

Surprisingly, there's not a huge emphasis on exercise (pretty much boils down to just move on a regular basis) or diet (mostly just cut back on the meat & minimize alcohol intake). Some of the old people they interviewed ate bacon every morning & never did cardio or strength training consistently. Even genetics didn't play a big role (as evidenced by the twins they studied).

Yeah, it's all about what you're willing to do. Michael Phelps ate like 8,000 calories a day while training, but he also swam for like 6 hours a day straight. I have a friend who has a similar program that she calls "eat whatever I want and workout 2 hours a day". She basically cooks like Paula Deen (throw a stick of butter in it!), but then does 2 hours of yoga & those dance-fitness videos while her kids are at school. It works...it's just a lot of commitment to following the daily workout routine. I definitely don't have that kind of motivation

I've often wondered about people who do that and what they're really doing to their health. My brother-in-law is 5'10", 140 lbs and developed Type 2 Diabetes at age 45. I've known a couple of skinny guys who've dropped dead of heart attacks before 60.

There's a local food writer who is also a personal trainer. She goes out regularly, eats great tasting food that is absolute shit for her, then states "Oh, looks like I'll be spending an extra hour on the treadmill tomorrow." Always struck me as odd coming from someone who is supposedly heavily invested in personal fitness.

It's not just about body weight.

The thing about dedicating an hour or more of your day every single day to working out is you have to ask yourself if it's really going to make you live longer than all that time you used up that could have been used doing something more fun.

If you workout 2 hours every single day that is 30 days per year spent working out. After 12 years of doing that, it's a whole year. Are you really going to gain 1+ year by doing that? Basically you need to figure out if there is actually a ROI.

I did the whole gym thing for a few years but I felt like I was just a robot with no purpose just wasting my time, and watching everybody else it was the same thing. I'll work out here and there but I just can't justify to spend hours non stop doing it.

It's a hobby for some people...what else would I be doing? I get enjoyment out of a two hour ride, and it does more for my health than two hours watching TV. Not everything in life has to have an ROI attached.

If you dread going to the gym, then I can see how it may seem like a waste of time. But I actually look forward to getting out of work and going to the gym. Gives me time to unwind from the day, and I get closer to accomplishing goals that I set for my body. Now I'm no body builder, and if I plan something after work I will no doubt skip the gym, but it doesn't have to be some massive time waster...

People respond differently to fasting. In reality, not any one diet works great for everyone.

You're late. These guys have been doing it for two years. They eat two meals a day with one full 24 hour fast a week.

These 2 annoyed me at first glance. They're too busy tasting themselves for you to take them seriously. But I suppose their system should work hypothetically.

fads, misinformation, general lying, lack of understanding & stupidity.

just like this thread, in reality, whenever these conversations pop up, even reasonably intelligent people just start spouting off nonsense. so that means like 85% of all people are completely useless to talk too about this shit. i just calmly walk away. look @ this thread. FFS.

I really wouldn't do a fruit diet we have an omnivore digestive tract by length. Pure herbivores have longer digestive tracts, multiple stomachs, etc. etc.

Way too much fructose. You utilize 38%-40% of the energy in glucose I would imagine it is less so in fructose the way its converted to fat then burned. Lots of converting. Thats tough on the liver. You might as well be on the ethanol diet.
