Finally got mine yesterday, thanks csc2 for the great deal. I had vacuumed the house Sunday, and let it run around the downstairs late last night and it picked up a ton of cat hair and some dirt. Less work for me and I felt like I accomplished something when I turned it off.

I've been tempted... anyone have trouble with big dogs attacking it? We always have a ton of dog hair on the floors... it'd be great to finally be able to keep up on it.

My dog, a 3yo Golden Retriever gives it a wide berth.

hrm, just read that Roomba Red doesn't do MAX cleaning mode... so if i want to just put it down and let if clean the entire floor, i should get the regular Roomba?

A few comments:

First, thanks to the OP for posting this. I'd considered it for a while, finally bit after seeing this thread. We've had it for a few weeks now, and it is awesome. We have a large yellow dog (retriever mix), and our wood floors used to feel like they had an invisible (and sometimes not so invisible) fur carpet on them. Roomba handles this mess better than we ever did using a broom and regular vacuum, and it's nearly effortless.

Second, the aforementioned yellow dog got used to it after two or three sessions and now just flat out ignores it. It bumps into his legs and he doesn't even look down.

Third, Roomba Red can do MAX mode if you have the remote (which it doesn't come with). I've ordered (but not yet received) it--seems to go for ~$20 everywhere.

Which leads me to point four: you can buy roomba accessories from quite a few online retailers. I just recently got the self-charging home base from everythinghome.com. It's on sale for $45.99 there, and includes the 3-hour charger. If you want more than one virtual wall it makes sense to just buy the full Discovery, but if you just want the roomba and the base, or even the roomba, base, and remote, this deal seems hotter to me. The base/quick charger is pretty cool--Roomba finds it by itself after cleaning and is always ready to go now, which makes it extremely convenient to just hit the button on the way out the door and keep the floors in a remarkably clean state all the time.

Fifth, if you have a young child, expect some extra entertainment. My three year old daughter calls it Roomby, knows how to turn it on and empty the dust bin, and tells everyone about it in the same tone she uses for our dog. She thinks it's perfectly normal that we have a robot in the house, and listening to her talk about it makes me feel like some small piece of life today lives up to my grade-school expectations for the 21st century. I still want my flying car, though.

If you want the max mode the remote from the older models works just as well (Less range than the new one, but I only use it for the Max mode) and you can usually find it discounted on ebay.

Even better, if you have a universal remote you can use it to access the Max mode on the Roomba Red without having to buy anything. If yours has downloadable codes, grab them from Remote Central. Otherwise, 'borrow' one and program it into your learning remote instead.

Other than that, the homebase with the fast charger is a great addon. Unless your buying two homebases you won't get free shipping at everythinghome so it will cost you $57 with shipping. Your better off buying it at Amazon for $51 with free shipping instead.

This page is a good resource for finding deals on the accessories.

Amazon.com has the Roomba Red on sale for $125.99. Use the $25 off $125 coupon (found on the same page as the Roomba) to drop the price to $100.99 with free shipping and no tax to most states.

The new Roomba Red is pretty much identical to the $250 Roomba Discovery, but it doesn't come bundled with any extras except for a single virtual wall and 3 filters. (The 3 hour charger, home base, wireless remote and wall mount are compatible and can be added on at a later time however.) It has the 3x larger dustbin, dirt detection, 7 hour charging and the new easy cleaning brush system.

Coupon code expires on December 19th, 2004.

After researching this thing for the past two hours I decided to bite. It looks to work good if you take care of it and I hope it will do the trick. Now If I can only get my kids to clean up all their stuff off the floors, I will be all set.

I ordered mine. There is another thread on FW using the A9 discount. It seems like alot of trouble so I didn't bite, but those needing the "best Price" can do their research and get another dollar or two off.

Just wanted to ask the present owners - seems like their are several add-on options that can be purchased. Are any essential?

Or just press clean again when it quits. IMO this is the only really dumb thing about it, it won't run until drained by default.

For those that got it within the last 30 days at the original price of $150 - $25 CPN (like me), what's the chances of Amazon refunding the $25 for the new price? I emailed them and asked for a $25 GC, can't hurt. You have until Jan 31 to return it if you don't like it, btw.

I got a $24 refund. I purchased mine less than 5 days before the price drop.

I ordered my on 30 NOV and it will be delivered later this week. Sent an e-mail to Amazon: "can I get a refund of the $25 or should I just return it?"

I'll let you know the outcome of the e-mail.

Just call them. If you purchased within the past 30 days they will refund the difference.

Jumped in! Thanks OP, I've been waiting for the deal, was hesitant because I like the idea of a self-charging docking station, but you can always add that on... $101 shipped is too good to pass up!
