OLED Technology is Coming in 2002!
If you've been tempted to buy one of those flat-panel, high definition 42-inch plasma video displays that hangs on the wall ... don't. Even though prices have dropped 50% since last year you'll probably be able to buy one for less soon ... OLED is coming, not in in years but months.
OLED = Organic Light-Emitting Diodes, a display technology that will eliminate the energy-consuming, back-lit LCD displays in our digicams, camcorders and various other electronic devices. It will also quickly replace the heavy and heat producing, wall-mounted plasma display screens too.
Predictions abound that we'll see wall-mounted displays up to 52" for about $1500. As for our digicams, an OLED color display requires no backlight or reflective light source. They are much sharper, weigh less and use only a fraction of the power of an LCD display so battery life will be improved. The new OLED displays will also replace the color LCD displays in laptop computers too. This is all going to happen in the next twelve months. We'll soon see drastic price cuts on plasma TVs, LCD monitors and anything that has a color LCD or plasma display as distributors clear their warehouses. The production facilities for the new OLED display technology are all now just coming online -- happy new year !
This is a forward-looking, crystal ball statement by yours truly. There is no rock solid, absolute proof that it's true but numerous sources seem to point me towards this conclusion. Here's a link to read about Kodak's OLED technology and partners.
