Rottweilers kick ass. My uncle & aunt have two of them.

Probably a little bigger than you want, though.

CORGI! Look em up, very smart, small, and obedient. Comes in 2 flavors too! Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Not sure if thats speled right tho. As far as I know, the only difference is color and if they are tail-less.

isn't it wrong to buy dogs? or cruel, Someone/something planted that in my mind, forgot where I heard it from, but they suggested that you adopt dogs.

OK, this is one of my areas of expertise!

I have a Wire Hair Fox Terrier myself... very much like a Jack Russell but slightly mellower.

Jack Russells are great, but unless you are high energy yourself, you'll be challenged every single day.

Tell me more about your personality and lifestyle and I will tell you the best breeds to fit you.

I have two Schnauzers. I love them. They are usually very good with children. They have really cute "personalities". Oh...I have miniature Schnauzers. There are also standard and giant.

Ah, I agree hzl.

Schnauzers of any size are a fine breed.

My cousin had one (standard size) named Heinekin (sp?)... Heiney for short. Awesome dog...

Get a mutt...

-smarter
-better temperment (in general)
-rarely gets sick (vet bills can get expensive with a purebred)

I've read this in quite a few books and also the nicest dogs I've met were mutts.

edit: but if I had to choose a purebred...
golden retriever.
some golden retrievers could be considered a medium size dog.

This weekend my brother is getting a Golden Retriever ... very smart, very cute, gets along with kids and the best thing, can adapt to small spaces, like apartments

Well, if you want to save a dog from the pound/Humane Society, look for a terrier mix. The size of the paws will give you a good indication of how big the dog will be, and yes, mutts are hardier.

Pure bred dogs have the advantage of being relatively predictable in temperment/size/health concerns, etc.

I did have a Corgi mix once... loved her... great dog.. but stubborn as piss!

Beagles are hard to train, I'd steer clear.

I'd go with a terrier or Schnauzer or a mixed breed that obviously has a lot of these breeds in it.

How much time do you want to put into training the dog? Golden retrievers are easy to train because they WANT to please. Jack Russells are extremely smart and will challenge you... foxy little things!

Keep us posted!

If I was to go with a jack russel's terrior or a schnauser, how much money are we talking for pure bred?

I love my Airedale Terrier. He's 14 years old and I sometimes consider him to be my best friend. He's as loyal as they come. My family has owned Airedales for almost 40 years straight.

$250-$400 low end, $500-600 if you really care about a fancy pedigree.

You can usually get a 'schnoodle' or other schnauzer mix for $200 or less... Lots of people like to mix schnauzers with other pure breeds to make cute, hardy little dogs.

Really, compared to an English Bulldog (1K and up) its' not bad at all.

Hey PCAddict, I grew up with the smaller version... the Welsh Terrier. Fine animals indeed.

Siberian Husky's are beautiful, but HUGE animals... if you can shell out the dough for them, and want to take good care of them...

Cocker Spaniels are small/medium size, and aren't yippy like smaller dogs.

My reccomendation, though, would be to a) look in your local paper for free puppies or b) go to your local shelter and save a dog's life.

Mutt's are good dogs to get, they tend to be stronger/healthier due to lack of inbreeding like you see in purebreds.
