so if you sell something for 1000bucks, you pay more than 50 bucks in ebay fees. Combine that with paypal 3% BEFORE they take out that 50 bucks and you're nearing 10%.

That's only if you are operating an eBay store.

I think I'll repeat this: The Final Value Fee increase is ONLY for eBay stores!

How is it gouging? If you don't like it go somewhere else. As long as you have no alternative the prices are reasonable.

That's an amazing argument.

Look, prices are determined by the market. If the market is still willing to pay it it's a reasonable price for the service they offer. It's called pricing determined by the market. Eventually it will get to a point where their fees are too much and they'll lose money because people can't afford to list items they previously would have been able to list. As long as there's enough people that can pay for this service because face it, they're offering a better product, then the price is fair.

I use eBay for moving a large amount of merchandise as well and I'm pretty damn grateful for them, but I would be EXTREMELY ecstatic if some other group, such as Google, would operate some sort of auction website to bring more actual competition to eBay. It can only help us sellers out even more!

Agreed. I was amused by the comment that the absence of an alternative makes the prices reasonable.

eBay may not be as cheap as it used to, but they've improved the site a great deal over the past 6 or so years so they have the right to charge more because they really do offer more now.

Exactly. A straightup auction site wouldn't be able to compete. Not with the customer base ebay has. There are ways to make an ebay competitor...but they'd have to offer a complete value added service. Such as all items listed are automatically listed as part of their huge online store and submitted to all price search engines.

Cheaper than ebay wouldn't do it. There'd have to be incentive for both buyers and sellers....and if you could make something like that ebay would buy you...

You'd lose that bet. I think I've probably bought 2 items on ebay in the last 3 years...it's just way too expensive half the time, not to mention full of scammers.

We understand that fees directly impact our members, and take care to ensure that any decisions to change fees are made only after careful consideration of this impact. These changes will help us continue to sustain and develop a thriving global marketplace, while balancing the needs of our buyers and sellers around the world.

Translation: ...after careful consideration of this impact on our share price. These changes will help us continue to satisfy our shareholders...

dont jump me for saying this...hehe, but im hoping UK ebay puts all their prices up extortionately....

but then i work for Loot, a free/paid classified advertising paper as an advertising executive and ebay is beginning to annoy us...lol
not so much from a revenue point of view, we make mucho casho out of people who do pay, but we offer a totally free service to people selling small items like household goods, furniture etc, or even cars...but a lot of them have started to drift towards ebay now thinking it'll work quicker, quite often it doesnt....its just more hi-tech as they only operate online, whereas Loot has both paper (the original format) and online site, so gets regarded a bit 'old hat' by more modern thinking people (ie those who actually use computers as opposed to those who are forced to sit at one in their office) despite the fact it offers more facets for selling your item.
(ok, i better stop here or i'll start sounding like an advert..lol)

edit: forgot to make the point i was attempting to...lol. If we lose our free ad content, then the circulation of the paper will most likely fall as we publish on a daily basis, no one will buy a paper that has no adverts in it for small items.....

For all the complaining, eBay has still managed to provide us with something nobody else...a marketplace to buy and sell with an enormous amount of customer traffic.

I'm not losing sleep over another $.50-$1 per auction. Sure, it can add up, but not to the point where it hurts.

small time sellers aren't going to get hurt by this. It's the power sellers thast sell small ticket items that get hurt by this. Especially the ones with ebay stores. Even the big ticket items get a huge hit if it's being sold in an ebay store.

hence, wagglepop

who knows if it will get shot down, just like bidville did, but at least someone is taking a shot at ebay. How can you know unless you try.

WTF is wagglepop? If youre looking for an alternative, I'd go yahoo auctions, overstock, amazon, ubid, in that order.

I too, was having a fit over the new fees. Then I realized that it mainly only applies to stores, which I dont use. Man, they should really make that a LOT clearer.

Trial balloon...they're just seeing how much outrage (or flak) they get with the new FVFs for Ebay Stores. I'll bet you they change the fee structure on the "normal" auctions within the year if they get away with this.

what the hell was google or ebay? yahoo was a weird name as well except that it was a Swiftian reference. Every site has to start from somewhere. I would say the name is one or two characters too long to type.
