>NIl has just released an experimental firmware that should allow burning 2x on ANY media.

does the burning 2x on ANY media apply to dvd-rw?

is there any hopes of getting firmware that lets this drive read faster? it takes longer to rip a DVD than to write it.

I pointed that out in another thread, and here was one of the responses (it sounds right to me):

The Pioneer is a slow ripper, something along the the lines of 2X speed average. By comparison, my Sony and Hitachi DVD drives will rip at 6X to 10X without too much problem. However if the DVD is beat up, a Netflix disk that has been around the block a time or thirty, the Pioneer has a better chance of doing the rip at the slower speed.

I broke down and bought a Lite-On dvd reader, and it rips 4x to 5x faster. I can rip the dvd, reduce it with dvd2one, and burn it on 4x media and the process is under an hour now.

$42 for the Lite-On, and I think it was money well spent. And I don't wear out the DVD burner as fast.

I remember reading on one of those firmware sites that different versions of firmware slowed down DVD reading.

I'll probably just live with it for a while. It's still a much faster process than the DVD2 to SVCD process I became used to.

how can you slow down the dvd reading anymore than it acually is. The pioneer burner only rips dvds out at 2x dvd speed. It takes like 40 mins for a dvd.

I was ripping at about 5x on my 105 in a firewire enclosure using DVD Decrypter. It surprised me to, because I thought it only did 2x.

So have they released the modded firmware that does 2x on any DVD-R? or is that in the works?

RC3 came out today, it burns 2x on any media (2x4all)--they are working on 2x on all DVDRW media now. Page 4 for RC3

The pioneer specs say it reads at 12x. Check tom's hardware to see some actual test results.

For dual layerd DVD-Rs, it's rated at:
DVD-ROM (Dual): Max 8X CAV

The problem is, the firmware is ported from the A04/104 which only reads at:
DVD-ROM (Dual): 2X CLV

I suspect that if you use one of the non-hacked firmwares you'll get better read speeds.

No. 1.00, 1.21 and 1.30 official firmwares all limit DVD ripping speed to 2x. Those firmwares also limit read speed on DVD-Rs (burned DVD-ROMs) to 2-4x. Manufactured DVD-ROMs read at up to 12x fine. I don't know what Pioneer is thinking by limiting read speeds so severely. It's frustrating to put in a backup DVD of downloads and have it read at a crawl. I bought a LiteOn 16x DVD-ROM that reads those same discs much faster.

The older firmware (0.58 and lower) reads discs much faster. Reviews like the one at THG show the speed wasn't limited with those versions.

I saw a thread that said most 2002 and later drives limit DVD-R to 2X for disks that have css copy protection on them. Just for the heck of it, I'll try ripping a DVD i made to see how that rips.

I'm aggravated because I gave away my DVD reader when I received this drive.

They just released the final 2x DVD-R media version and an experimental 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW firmware. I am using the 2X all one right now and it works great with my 1x LeadData discs

I like to use offical Firmwares... plus I use 4x disks anyway.

if you have an A05, hen why not burn at 4x? It will change your world. (but it does hurt the pockets)

anywho, 4x is awesome, never ever had a bad burn. I like that asurance with an offical firmware... with hacks, you have to test your bulk media.

1.30 is an official firmware from Pioneer
the 2x4DVD-R is based off of this official firmware
You have to go to the australian pioneer page to get the official 1.30 i think.
anyway, now the 2x4DVD-R has moved out of the Release Candidate world and into the FINAL Release.
Now they are working on a 4x4DVD-R + 2x4DVD-RW firmware, hasnt worked yet though

Edit:
This is a nice thread with all the flashing procedures, and ALL the firmware for this drive Official and hacked
