Help! Finished building my first build but I'm going crazy cause I can't get XP set-up!
First off, these are my components:

AMD Athlon X2 +4400
Asus A8N-SLI Premium MB
2 x 1GB Corsair XMS TWINX2048-3200 RAM
WD Raptor 74GB 10KRPM HD
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 300GB 3gb/s HD
EVGA Gforce 7600GS Video Card
Enermax 500W Liberty PSU
NEC ND-3550A DVD+/-RW
Mitsui 7in1 Floppy
OEM Windows XP MCE

I am able to go into the MB setup, no problem. I was able to format both drives. But when it starts the actual instal, it giving me a message saying it can't load a given file and that it may be corrupted.
If I chose, ESC it continues loading and a few seconds later, same messege regarding another file pops up so I can't fully install XP.
This is the "good" scenario. The other case, I boot and before install begins, I get this error:
STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll

So I reboot and one or the other will occur!
Someone please help me! I don't know what to do!

If you want to try something quick, crank the memory voltage to 2.8 volts and try one more time.

I also have two other suggestions:

1) do not plug in the Mitsumi's card reader just yet, unless you enjoy having your hard drive end up as drive F:

2) this usually gets obstinate resistance, but... plug in your EZ Plug to add four more power-delivery points to your mobo-to-PSU connection.

Not a burnt disk, its new OEM. Memory checks out fine I think. How can run Memtest without XP installed?

Last I knew, they had a floppy version too. Be aware that Memtest86 is not infallible... if it were my system, the first thing I'd do is kick the memory voltage up to the full 2.8 volts that your XMS modules are rated for, and try another Windows installation. It shouldn't take long to find out if that's what it wants or not Memtest86'ing 2GB of RAM could take you until midnight.

Ok...going to try that first. Thanks.

No dice...set the memory voltage to 2.8v and got the "file\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded error 7" the first time and the "STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll" BSOD the 2nd try.
Ahhhhhhhhh!

Does the CD looks like it's in good shape (no fingerprints, scratches, etc)? Have you tried a different optical drive as a fact-finding step?

The Voices said :Q ~ mech! Look at Asus's FAQ page! and they might have a point.

System will stop at Windows XP Logo page when I update nForce4 chipset driver on Seagate7200.9 series SATA2 hard disk. How can I solve it?

Due to Seagate7200.9 series SATA2 hard disk firmware limitation, please update the hard disk firmware to 3AAD or later. You can exchange the hard disk from Seagate service center.
It might be interesting to find out what firmware revision your 7200.9 has (the label probably says somewhere). If that's the issue, you could certainly justify requesting a refund on the drive, and go pick one up locally so you can get down to business.

The CD went from the box staight to the drive so not a smudge.
I'm booting off the WD Raptor not the Seagate, though that might be an issue later if I get this thing going!

These XP no installs things usually boil down to 8 things tho its not a sure thing

1.) The single most important thing is to use XP PRO disc with year 2006 (downloaded from MS) SP2 slipstreamed during install. There was no PCI-E bus, SATA II or advanced ACPI APIC during SP0 or SP1, and no dual vore CPU.
The PCI-E vidcards are now giving pci.sys errors during installs with non SP2.
Updating to SP2 afterwards does no good for install probs.
XP Home does not support multi CPU.
SP2 slipstreamed also gives you auto matic >137GB support, and is really a must today. You have to use slipstreamed XP SP2.
2.) Theres the HDD "auto" detect option in bios, that has to be changed to (seemingly incorrect) "large", for boot device whether SATA or IDE
3.) Mobo that claim to have SATA II may only have "bridge", so SATAII must be jumpered down to SATA I in rear of HDD.
4.) Using XP install can cause probs with latest mobo when used to format and partition. You must use HDD utility to partition and format first by floppy and set boot part as active. If you are using NTFS, make part <32GB, and change it in diskmanager later.
5.) Never use wiFi or wireless or USB HW (mouse/KB) during install and have all usb off in bios during first install - you can add/enable later.
6.) DVD/CDR must be installed by itself as master on IDE channel to avoid DMA transfer probs, and until XP is installed, set device in bios as PIO mode 4 (16MB/s).
7.) Bad RAM - one must run memtest 86+(plus) before install from booted to floppy.
Never use more than 1 stick to install XP.
8.) You must turn off all HDD in bios except for install drive and enable it as boot drive.
and as a tip:
One can run the install in safe mode which tends to help with driver conflicts.
One can install in DOS mode......
There are two setup commands on CD - winnt.exe and winnnt32.exe
winnt.exe is 16 bit DOS
Use a win98 boot disc to navigate to this file on CD or do it directly

Edit: FWIW:
Memtest 86+ is www.memtest86.org not the older no longer made www.memtest86.com

Edit 2:
Just noticed you are using MCE - I would dual boot that thing with XP Pro SP2 on "C" and MCE on "D"

Ok...Did #2 and #6, did 1st part of 8 (#3 & 5 don't apply). Only using one of the 2 memory sticks (#7). I don't have XP Pro so I can't do 1 or "edit 2", though because I'm faculty at my University, I can get a full version of XP Pro for $8.85!
So I tried installing again with these changes and got through all the way to setup without errors but, again, it says it can't load certain files and gives me the option to continue or exit. I continued a couple of times to see what type of files weren't loading: .ttf, .sys, .chn, .dll.

Can you borrow a Windows XP CD from a friend and try installing it. I bought Windows XP Home OEM from a local store and had similar problems. It would get part way through the installation and then give me an error message saying it couldn't copy certain files from the CD. The CD looked perfect no scratches or flaws. After trying everything I could think of I took the CD back to the store I bought it from and they tried installing it on one of their new system and got the same error. So it ended up being a bad CD (maybe missing data or corrupted).

I tried a ripped versions of XP Pro and Xp Home and got similar results. I guess it could be hardware related but I just don't get it.
So it's only able to read some data off the cd but not other??
Isn't it all just one's & zero's?!

You clearly seem to have a CD reading prob here, or gross hardware incompatibility.
But since this sis your first build, it could be anything.
Your manual says the following:
When using one DDR RAM Module only - USE SLOT B1 only (third slot from CPU)
I also do not see your RAM listed in manual.

1)Time to try a new known working DVD/CDR device
2)Could be a bad SATA cable receptacle on mobo Switch ports. You are supposed to start with SATA 1 - upper right of 8 avail.
3)Could be bad IDE controller contact on mobo for CDR - change channels (prim to second)
4)I would also try with a cheap VGA PCI vidcard
5)Replace DVD/CDR burner cable with 80 conductor just for hell of it
6)Make sure all necessary power molex in - vidcard and mobo xtra square 4 pin CPU 12V, 24 pin EATX (the easy plug straight mobo molex is only for 2 graphics cards
7)Do both X2 cores show in boot screen?
8)You must run WD drive test utility to check for drive function - downloadable floppy from their website. Boot to A:
9)How did you format - partition - filesystem - sizes drive?
10)Looks like you still didnt run memtest86+ (www.memtest.org) from floppy bios booted set to A:. You dont need any O/S.
12)Hope you dont have ANY PCI cards in to complicate things
13)Hope yoo only installed one power fitting to HDD not both.(15 and 4 pin)
14)Does CPU fan spin?
15)Does board leds show green?
16)To see if mobo is shorting to case - you will have to take it out and run it on telephone book next to case opening.
17)Make sure Clear CMOS jumper is on Pins 1-2
18)Com ports OFF in bios
19)Single VidCard in blue slot only

If you are feeling adventouros.........

To start Windows XP setup from MSDOS:
Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD/DVD-ROM drive.
Use a Windows 98 startup disk to start the computer to an MS-DOS prompt with CD-ROM support. If you do not have a Win98 startup disk or your boot menu does not allow you to start to an MSDOS prompt, you can get one at www.bootdisk.com or read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article-Q187632-which tells you how to create a Windows 98 Startup Disk that supports FAT32.
Start SMARTDrive, if not already started. It should be on the Win98 startup disk. To do this find the folder that contains Smartdrive.exe. Type smartdrv-->Press Enter. NOTE: If you do not use SMARTDrive, be prepared for a very long install session. ***
Look for the Smartdrv.exe file on the MS-DOS startup disk. If it's not there, you can copy it to your boot floppy from the \Windows\Command folder of any version of Windows 95/98/Me.
***
At the command prompt type D: (or whatever you CD/DVD-ROM drive is)-->Press Enter.
Type cd\i386-->Press Enter.
Type winnt.exe-->Press Enter. Then Windows Setup starts.
Type the path to the Windows XP Installation files-->Press Enter (For example- d:\i386)
Setup copies files to the hard drive. When complete the following message appears: The MS-DOS based portion of Setup is complete. Setup will now restart your computer. After the computer restarts, Windows XP Setup will continue. If there is a floppy disk in drive A:, remove it now.
Press Enter to restart your computer and continue Windows XP Setup. Remove any floppy disks, then press Enter to continue. Follow the steps to select and format a partition in which to install Windows XP.
If there is only one partition, do not delete it from the list of existing partition because Windows XP has copied the installation files to that partition.
Want to convert from a FAT32 file system to an NTFS? You can do it later.
Setup copies the files needed for XP Setup and the computer restarts
If you previously chose NTFS as your file system, Windows checks the drive for errors and then restarts.
XP Setup resumes in GUI (Graphical User Interface) mode, the opposite of text mode.
Follow the steps in Windows Setup Wizard to complete the installation.
