New Game that isn't depressing...

I've been playing Stalker: Clear Sky, after finishing the first one, and I like it alright, but it is getting pretty dreary...
Now Fallout 3 is out, and it looks awesome, but I just don't think I can take the bleak, gray, radiated, mutant-filled wasteland look any more, at least not for a while. Is there anything out that isn't so depressing, hopefully an RPG or FPS (I never really liked RTS games)

I missed Oblivion, which looks good but supposedly gets kinda boring after a bit. Maybe that would be good. Any suggestions?

I wish HL2 episode 3 would come out, I love those damn games!

Half Life has one of the most depressing worlds....

Oblivion was green and lush and, well, boring and shallow.
The Witcher isn't bleak and gray and radiated, although the main character specializes in mutations.
Farcry 2 looks pretty colorful.

I'm currently enjoying Fallout 3, but I think I know how you feel. Whenever I get tired of bleak shooters, something from world war II usually cheers me up. And I'm only slightly kidding! It's combat, but more or less the "sporting" kind, where you know what's what.

Well, there's always FarCry 2 for some mindless shooting and the fun of blowing things up without being bothered by A.I much since they're dumb, the environment is not desolate so at least it fits that criteria, if not then why not the original FarCry? It's still a good game, in my opinion anyway.

WTH's a matter with you guys? Who the hell doesn't like a dark, dreary, depressed, post apocalyptic setting? Is there any other kind, lol?

Saint's Row 2 has 3 or 4 dark cut scenes, but the game's fun and doesn't take itself seriously at all.

Supreme Commander has robots dying instead of humans or mutants.

Age of Wonders.
Age of Mythology.
Dungeon Keeper 2 and Duke Nukem both have sort of a happy, violent theme to them.
If you cant find Duke Nukem go for Duke Nukem: Manhatten Project.
Evil Genius mey be exactly what you need.
Freedom Force.
Full Throttle.
Heroes Of Might & Magic.
MDK and MDK2.
No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.
Psychonauts!!!!!
Serious Sam 1st and 2nd encounter.
Test Drive Unlimited.

Also, get STEAM and play the Sam & Max games. Those will certainly make you feel better.

actually, I wasn't joking

TBH, the dreary, post apocalyptic setting is my favorite, I was just tired of it and surprised how many games use it. Probably because its so cool.

Besides the setting itself, many games use a bleak color palette to try to enhance the atmosphere, which only sometimes works. HL2 was totally successful in showing a detailed world while still being vibrant and detailed.

I'll check out some of those suggestions tho. Psychonauts sounds cool, and I completely forgot that I wanted to play that. I want to try Crysis, but it looks kinda meh...

I think I have just been yearning for a game with a good story for a long time. I've been let down by a bunch of the last games I've played, so I'm very wary of Fallout3 being just as un involving as Clear Sky (storyline-wise)...

Wow, looks like a Diablo-clone that doesn't suck! Downloading the demo...

P.S.: Don't you love those things? DEMO's, short for demonstration, short for let me see if this game is a POS before I spend money on it.

Felt the same recently, and the glut of FPS/Third Person shooters with mutants/monsters/demons with similar locales was getting on my nerves. I ended up buying NBA2K9 and a Xbox360 controller for use with my PC and I have had a great time so far. Sometimes you just need a genre break and sports games are great for that.

It's basically a Diablo 2 clone with a Greek mythology setting. The dungeons aren't randomized, so replay is limited. However, it will take hours upon hours to go through the game and several more hours if you do the side quests, which are also very fun.

The environments range from dark caves, to snow capped mountains, the banks of Hades, Olympic coliseums, Japanese temples, lush jungle foliage, and all the way back to open fields of grain waving in brilliant sunlight. Lots of well used particle effects and lighting too, which are very pretty. Lightning and fire mage skills, or dream skills should get you plenty of eye candy.

Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Batman. All great games.

Oh, also pop in some old school Serious Sam. Lots of bright, open terrain areas.
