Hi all, i'm in the market for a new PC game and was just curious what you all are playing these days. Right now i've only got Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock to mess around with really, so i'm open to pretty much anything! (and I mean ANYTHING ) I should be able to run most games but here are my specs if that would have an effect on your reccomendation. Thanks!

X2 4800+ @2.63GHz
2GB RAM
8600GT @ 661/848

I am playing NeverWinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, best game that I have played in a while. (Not as good as BG2 or PS:Torment, but substantially better than NWN2). A must play for any fan of story driven, party based, RPGs.

RTS:
Supreme Commander
World in Conflict
Company of Heroes
Warcraft 3
Sins of a Solar empire (slower and larger scale then normal RTS)
Homeworld 1 + Cataclysm expansion + Homeworld 2

FPS:
Battle Field 2
Team Fortress 2
FEAR
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Crysis
Aliens vs Predator 2 (old with outdated graphics but still one of the most scariest games to date)

4x:
Civilization 4
Galatia Civilization 2

MMO:
WoW
EVE Online
Age of Conan (I think it's out by now)
EverQuest
Guild Wars
Runescape (j/k)

Other:
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries (stand alone expansion to MW4 with unrelated story)
Black and White 2 (we've all wanted to randomly smite people)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Continuum

All I can think of off the top of my head.

There are currently no MP games with active communities worth playing.

there is a single active UT2k4 TDM server in the US that is configged properly.

As for SP games. If you haven't, I would suggest playing through some of the following

Max Payne 1 and 2
Planescape Torment
Half-Life
Baldurs Gate II
Diablo 1/2 (1 is good for tons of replay value, and if you have a couple friends, 1 to diablo is a fun challenge to partake for a night. Diablo 2 has very little replay value but is excellent it's first time through, suffer through act 3, it gets better and the cinemas are worth it)

and basically you just need to keep going back in time and picking out the gems, games like Crusader No Remorse/regret are always golden.

I've been addicted to Sins of a Solar Empire and The Witcher lately...but every now and then some Sid Meier's Pirates!

Those SP games are all great suggestions - but how can you keep a straight face an argue that there are NO MP games worth playing? TF2, CS, WoW, etc. etc.. YOU may not like them, but you've made a pretty bold statement.

It's pretty easy, all those games suck tremendously. TF2 has a plethora of problems described elsewhere by yours truly. CS hasn't been covered in depth by me, but to some extent, WoW problems are everywhere, especially in my sig.

Also you need to note my qualifier, with active communities. There are a few well balanced, fun, and fair MP games, no one plays them for precisely the reasons listed.

I'm just curious as to your qualifications to pass absolute judgment on so many games. As I see it, millions upon millions of people disagree with you. In regards to the article in your sig, it's based on personal preference and over 2 years old. I've read it - it's incredibly easy propose a counter point for every argument the author makes but before you ask, I won't do it simply because these arguments are based on opinion and neither side is going to concede. It seems to me you're just a sorely disappointed gaming elitist.

Are you referring to this game?

Anyways, what is Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries like, compared to Vengeance?

not sure how well the 8600 will handle WIC

I run WiC on my laptop, which has an 8600M GT, with medium settings quite well. I would imagine that the desktop version would run it much better.

Company of heros + the expansion is AMAZING online. I really mean that, ive played every single strategy game worth mentioning recently with the exception of universe at war (i dont like the engine and the reviews dont impress me), and company of heros is great fun online. Every game you play is different, it unfolds differently, i dont mean minor differences either, sometimes you will have to deal with a blob of enemy infantry other times its tanks or maybe even a turtle. The 4 sides are also radically different, the US and Wehrmacht have more in common with eachother than brits or panzer elite but theyre nowhere near the same.

Also gameplay aside the online interface is amazing, im used to basic stuff like starcraft or what c&c usually tries to pass off as a modern interface but in company of heros its a lot more streamlined, you can click on anyones name anywhere and msg them see their stats etc, invite friends to a game, chat while you wait for the game to fill up (in the main room not just with the sorry souls that join your game). Its a very well thought out system. I got bored with company of heros vanill quickly but the new expansion adds a lot to the game with the two new very different sides. Your 8600 will handle it well, im playing it on highish settings with my DDR2 laptop version 8600.

Other good games mentioned you should look into (not as good as company of heros imo but there ya go):

1. World in conflict (runs poorly on my 8600, you may have better luck, fun game)
2. Sins of a solar empire (great little game, i will definately get the expansion as the expansion includes a full campaign)
3. The Orange box (portal is a lot of fun, every gamer should have the orange box in his collection)

No, wasn't referring to AplhaWaves.

For MW4: Mercs, I found it a lot better then MW4: V. You have two story paths you can take, and various missions where you can chose how to approach a task, unlocking or blocking some things depending on what missions you take. The black market for weapons and mechs is really nice as well. I even found the grahpics looked a bit better.

One of the VERY few games where I've played through the SP campaign more then once (3 times and still want to do it again).

Yes I'm a gaming elitist, I only like games that don't suck.

Time could not possibly matter less, the article is still 100% valid.

Soviet: I haven't played Company of heroes so I'll have to defer to your judgement there, I will give it a try though.

World in Conflict I could never find anyone to play with, maybe I just had bad luck, it seemed like the game could go places, I just never got a chance to see.

Sins isn't my type of game, can't say all that much about it.

Orange box is drivel .

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and its first expansion, Winter Assault. Those games are great, with some strong storyline driven campaigns. If you like the universe enough, you can also pick up Dark Crusade (the next expansion, less storyline but more backstory) and Soulstorm (same as Dark Crusade, much more backstory if you're willing to look but the campaign isn't storyline driven).
The sequel, Dawn of War 2, is predicted to be the biggest competitor of Starcraft 2. The series really is spectacular

Give Civ 4 a try, but like all of those games I find they get really boring at the end.

For some great RPG action, pick up Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2 (but be sure to play them in order). They're a lot of fun, the characters are great (HK-47 is the greatest RPG character of all time, hands down). The story is interesting. I can't wait for a KOTOR 3.
I recently finished Jade Empire, done by the same guys who did KOTOR. The story is just as good, but the gameplay is only so-so. The combat system is way underdeveloped, but it has all of the good parts of an action RPG

Sins of a Solar Empire was a ton of fun. Try it

Did you ever play Quake 4? I'd recommend it, the singleplayer campaign was excellent.

The article discusses the old honor system which functions now completely differently. The article argues that soloing should be as effective in an MMO as grouping and that the term massively multiplier shouldn't mean you have to group. It also states that the social atmosphere is weak because you can only communicate within guild? I don't even know how narrow minded you must be to view things that way. General chat/whispers/private channels/etc. exist for a reason - I associate with just as many non-guildies in WoW as I do guildies. The article is inherently flawed due to the writer's bias. That's all that needs to be said.

NWN2: Gold Edition is on sale right now (it includes NWN2 and the expansion pack: MotB) for the price that I paid for just MotB when it first came out ($30).
