SSD's are an amazing upgrade though I wouldn't call it the second coming of 3d... until you use one and then try to use a system without one. At least that was my impression. MY ssd was a nice upgrade. It was noticeable but it wasn't until I used the wife's system that I realized the new found hell I would forever be in.

As far as saving time goes, you are all right, it is only a second here and there but with the amount that I use my computer I would assume that it adds up to a couple of hours of saved time each month. Not a lot but not small either.

Overall though I would say that an SSD upgrade is great if you do and ok if you don't. It's not a deal breaker.

Come on guys. I have used dial up, and believe me, waiting for a big file to download on dial up is a far cry from waiting for a file to open from my hard drive. And Shintai, are you saying an SSD is a bigger advance than the improvement we have seen in gpus and cpus? Seriously? Should i ditch my i5 and discrete gpu and to back to my athlon xp 2600 with integrated graphics on the mb with an SSD?

I'd rather use a c2q 9550 with an SSD than an i5 2500 with no ssd if we are talking about general purpose office/web use.

lol at all this SSD nonsense. yes its faster and for daily use a regular HD would feel a little slow after using an SSD for a while but overall its no big deal for most people. it has no impact on gaming other than load times which again is hardly a big deal. and yes I have used an SSD in my laptop. I care nothing about getting one for my desktop since I like to use just one hard drive to keep things simple and a 2gb SSD is insanely priced.

lol at all this anecdotal nonsense. If the slow performance of a HDD is subjectively no big deal to you, have at it. But the hard data clearly show the opposite.

I was an SSD holdout for a while. I started threads in Memory and Storage, about how SSDs weren't that great.

I guess I'm just a patient guy.

Anyways, I have SSDs (or hybrid drives) in most of my computers. The only ones that I don't, are a Gateway AIO that I just purchased with Win8 64-bit, and I don't have a clean install media for that system, and another Gateway slimline desktop that only had two SATA ports on the motherboard, so instead of an SSD + HDD combo (with DVD drive too), I had to settle for a 2TB Seagate 7200 RPM desktop hybrid drive.

What really convinced me, was that things like Malwarebytes scans would complete in like 1/2 to 1/3 the time of the scan on the HDD.

(Malwarebytes scans are CPU-limited on my new AIO, sadly, so I may never put an SSD into this one, unless the HDD dies.)

I see your point, and I am sure it "feels" better.

You bring up a good point about how it feels. I think the feeling is amplified when you go back to hard drive, or 'lose' it after you get acclimated to just expecting it.

I guess, no offense meant to you personally King, but I just sort of resent the prevailing feelings on these forums that one is old fashioned and not technically knowledgeable unless they feel they must have an SSD. As far as the horseless carriage analogy, it is a bit extreme dont you think?

I agree, and I'm sorry it came across that way. I meant to focus on the 'good enough' aspect. Just the first thing came to mind was an old fashioned example.

But I guess another analogy, which I personally experienced, was screwdrivers/tools. I had been perfectly happy with my trusty manual screwdriver, and didn't need the cordless power driver because I could spin screws plenty fast myself. Well I finally broke down and got a lithium-powered driver, and holy cow it's something I just didn't realize I was missing until I got used to it. That's still kind of an old-fashioned example, but I swear I was convinced that I'd never really use the power tool and it's just easier to have the manual driver etc.

I was totally convinced, but there is no substitute for actually giving it a try and seeing how you feel when you are faced with giving it up - is it noticeable to lose it after you get used to it.

Also another business example: I booted my laptop and thought I had plenty of time before my call. Well, the call started and I had to just talk and delay as I waited for my computer to load all the filed etc. I mean, that was embarrassing, and I miscalculated because I was so used to SSD speed in booting+loading lots of apps needed for the meeting, that when I had to actually sit there twiddling my thumbs it was a real eye-opener how valuable time can be in certain cases when you hit a deadline or have to open something for a boss immediately.

I can relate... whenever I do a presentation to the team here at work I always have to get to the meeting room 5 to10 minutes earlier just to setup everything and turn on my PC. I use a i5 powered Dell laptop with HDD and that thing drags itself forever, Outlook and Office apps take forever to load

Guys, it's already built apparently, and it's a good build.

OP, DO NOT BUY A HYBRID DRIVE. It's a huge waste of bucks for a desktop.

Just get a 128G or larger SSD for your OS + main games. Map everything else (docs/music/yadda yadda) to your 1TB when you do get that SSD. Decent SSDs are 500+MB/sec across the whole drive, hybrids have smallish mediocre SSD cache on a regular drive, and distinctly underperform legit SSDs.

Arkaign is spot on. Hybrid drives are a waste of money. SSD for OS + main games and Mechanical drive for everything else.

I have a SSHD in my HTPC, it's nothing special, it boots up Windows faster or loads up most frequently used apps faster. The one I have is one of those earlier 7200rpm Seagate ones, their newer ones are all 5400rpm and no I wouldn't buy another again, SSD for OS and HDD for storage is best done, period.

what do you mean the newer ones are all 5400? I have one of the newest ones and its 7200. Unless something changed in the last few weeks the 1 and 2 tb desktop SSHD are still 7200. It was the first notebook ones that were and still are 5400 rpm.

Yes the 2.5" were and still are 5400rpm, desktop 3.5" SSHDs are 7200rpm. Perhaps he is talking about the 2.5" drives.

Maybe, I just remember reading specs on those 3.5" and being put off by them when I saw 5400rpm, it could have very well been 2.5" specs I was looking at.

I have 2 1TB EVO's here and I'd never change. One for the OS and one for scratch, backed by a 4770 and 16GB RAM. The system is liquid. Literally.

Seagate's first hybrid drives were their Momentus XT line, AFAIK, and they were 2.5" and 7200RPM. Their newer desktop hybrid drives are also 7200RPM. However, they have moved to 5400RPM for their current 2.5" hybrid drives. Kind of a shame.

Actually from a pure logical standpoint it makes complete sense: I mean they have the fast flash for fast I/O and then write and read back to the HDD. This way they at least somewhat alleviate one of the biggest problems of HDDs which is access time and therefore they can use slower drives which use less energy and are quieter.

Of course reality probably looks different but I at least get their reasoning.

Edit: but we are off topic on a thread that is already a necro thread, so I think we should just agree to disagree. Or if you guys like, I will even agree that an SSD is a nice upgrade, but just not worth it for me. Why should I spend money and time to "improve" something I am happy with?

No. But, getting a good SSD (like Samsung Evo) would be as big of an upgrade as going from Athlon XP 2600 to i5.
