I remember years ago when Crucial launched their first set of Ballistix RAM. In the comments section below the relevant Anandtech article/review/news piece/whateveritwas (I think this was pre-Dailytech), I commented that naming their RAM "Ballsstix" was a pretty lame marketing tactic. Several others confided that, when they first saw the name, they also thought the name was "Ballsstix".

A rather-upset Crucial rep replied that the product was indeed not named "Ballsstix" but "Ballistix". Despite the correction, whenever I see people talking about Ballistix, I still remember the wrong name.

Ahem! Back on-topic. Hope that RAM upgrade helps you . . . were you running out of RAM or swapping too frequently with 8 gigs?

I just had a really strong urge to get another set. Some games I have require a minimum of 8 gb on ultra such as battlefield 4. Plus I was not running ram in two slots and was not taking advantage of the duel channel. Now that I have two 8 gb sticks, the computer has slightly less lag when running multiple applications and games.

You can get ~250GB SSD's for barely more than $100 these days, easily. Probably cheaper when a sale comes around. Your next step should be an SSD before anything else. It isn't a lot of money for a lot of overall system enhancement.

i couldn't live with a non SSD for an OS disk, i jumped on the OCZ agility years ago when it dropped to $2/gb, i still think even for an OS drive only and a hybrid for storage would give you a much smoother PC experience. Though HDDs and ram are easy to upgrade. Enjoy the new rig.

+1 to this.

I would do a fit of rage if i didnt have a SSD as my main bootup drive.

I don't want to have two different hardrives in my pc. I like having all of my applications and games on one drive. Until I can find and SSD for under $200 with 1tb, I won't buy one which may take years for the price to drop. All of my games and DLC alone has taken up close to 400gb.

I also have a 1tb external for backup. If I am looking for more speed I might go with a 1tb hybrid drive or WDD Raptor drive. But as it stands now I am very happy with the speed.

oh boy... be prepared to wait a very long time then...

And a hybrid drive or a raptor can not touch the raw speed of a SSD.

Trust me... i used to run 6 raptors on R0 on a dedicated controller (arc-1680xi), and it still loses to a single SSD.

I understand the raw speed it has but the price point to gb is too high for me which was better spent elsewhere such as the memory and video card. I was able to upgrade to more ram and a better video card instead of getting a low gb SSD and I don't regret it at all.

this is why we are trying to tell you, to run dual drives.
A 120gb SSD for main boot drive will cost under 90 dollars.

If you dont mind the map load time, run your games on a standard hdd.
The OS should be on a SSD tho.
It will mean a lot when you turn your PC on and OFF.
It will also mean a lot when you load up web pages, run any software outside games.

My brother was ranting how his PC was slower then his laptop.
I told him its because your laptop has a SSD.
He then got a SSD for his PC, and now u dont see him using his laptop anymore unless he's not at his desk.

Dude your beating a dead horse lol. Nothing will have me change my mind SSD unless the prices drop to my liking or someone gives me the over $500 needed for the 1tb SSD I want. Besides my PC boots into Windows 8 in less than 10 seconds and I am fine with that. All of my games and applications run fine as well.

lol... ok other then that, i dont see a problem with your build.

I do not like 5 1/4 optical drives tho.
I prefer them to be on USB and portable.

The reason to this is because they seem to accumulate a lot of dust inside.
Also unless your very heavy into using a optical drive, it sits unused about 90% of the time.

With faster internet its far better to download all the drivers you would require, as they are typically more updated then the CD provided by the manufacturer.
I also assume you use a game client which u download all your games from.
This will basically make your optical drive even more useless in the 5-1/4 bay.

To each their own.

Thanks for your input though.

I saw the title of this thread and I nearly died laughing. Seriously, why did you go FX? There is next to no reason to.

I second the SSD, and that 770 2GB will run out of vRAM sooner rather than later.

I understand you have your mind made up about the SSD but truth be told there is probably no greater bang for your buck than an upgrade to SSD. The performance boost is far greater than memory or video card upgrades, providing you are not running running with a 6 year old video card and 512MB of system memory.

I'm afraid no system can be considered a beast with a HDD as the main storage.

Because I had a tight budget and AMD FX is fine for me. It's mainly a gaming rig and not a video editing machine in which Intel is superior. I can play any game I have on ultra including crysis 3 and battlefield 4 at 1080p and I never drop below 30 frames while I average 40-50 frames per second on my most graphically demanding games.

The only game I can not play on max settings is watchdogs which I don't like anyway after renting it for my PS4. Even so watchdogs is suffering from poor pc optimization right now.

Of course my computer is not the most powerful or can compare to some others on this forum. But what matters is that it does everything I want it to and works great for me.

That makes the FX selection even worse. On the same budget you could have gotten a much faster i5.

I really don't care at this point. Everyone has their personal preference and opinions. All that matters is that I am happy and the pc does everything I need.

Also in terms of gaming the FX does fine next to Intel.

If people don't want to build themselves and don't want the individually by far best performance\watt\price options available...then let them get second best.

When someone defies logic and data - it's usually for different reasons the choice was made and\or cannot be changed now anyway.

Yall sorta beting a dead horse here, this "gaming rig" has been running single channel ddr3 since inception and apparantly SSD's is just a fad that'll pass. There is reasoning and then there is not. Ill argue that here, there is not.

What is amusing is that with the passing years the FX had gained ground as a solid pick for gaming. Guess games are finally starting to catch up in the efficiency department.

Also, LOL at the people that think a FX sucks because it cant sustain something like 150 fps playing -insert badly optimized game- in -insert laughable low resolution and IQ settings- just like an i5 or i7 would.

lol not that video again

reality is that an even an older 2500k is faster overall for gaming. in fact in some games an 8350 cant even stay above 60 fps no matter how much gpu power you have.

Have you ever gamed on an FX? I had an FX 6300 and the dips were horrific. You can't sustain a solid 60FPS, forget 150FPS, and the minimums are laughable.

Overall, you have done well and have a great system.

You will like that single HDD until the drive fails, then you will be in tears wondering how to restore the OS and games. Although your external backup drive is a big help.

Regarding the SSD recommendation ...
I think you may not know how to set it up. A 1TB SSD is not necessary. It is preferable to keep the operating system on a "system" drive separate from your files and games. Below is one possibility to put the games on an SSD drive. Another possibility is to put the OS on an SSD and leave the games on the 1TB HDD.

Main Windows OS: 128GB SSD ($60 - $80)
Games - Origin: 256GB SSD ($125)
Games - Steam: 256GB SSD ($125)
Files: 1TB HDD

1) Copy the large game folders to the SSD.
2) Rename the game folder on C: drive.
3) Create a Junction from the C: game installation folder to the new folder on the SSD.
4) Verify the games operate normally.
5) Delete the original games folder from the C: drive.

.

For Origin and Steam use Junction Links.
