Use: Mainly gaming, nothing insane. Emulation (Dolphin, which is more CPU intensive than GPU). 1080p...maybe VR in the future but not now
Price: I'd like to keep the price below $1000
Country: USA
Fanboyism: I've had good experiences with Intel in the past...
Existing parts: I will be using my MSI GTX1060 6gb, case (ATX Factor), and OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W PSU (unless an upgrade IS required), SATA II 1Tb HDD for storage, Additional SATA II 500Gb HDD
Overclocking I'd like to OC just a bit, nothing extreme, not looking to break any records
Resolution: 1920x1080
Timeframe: In the next 4-5 months, i'm not in a rush
Software: No OS needed, My windows 10 license is transferable

This is what I'm thinking so far, it's based off of a Tom's Hardware build:
Mobo: ASUS X99 Extreme4 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157543)
CPU: Intel Core i7-6800K Broadwell-E 6-Core 3.4 GHz (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117649)
CPU Fan: DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 400 CPU (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856005)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2666 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232175)
SDD: SanDisk Ultra II 2.5" 240GB SATA III (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820173011)

Again this is a tentative list, I'm not super adamant about anything specific. Thanks for the help!

Since you can wait 4-5 months, you can see how Intel responds to Ryzen. It might be announced at Computex in June:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-skylake-x/

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52336...e-processor-arrive-lga-3647-socket/index.html

Also, by then most of the early issues with Ryzen should be ironed out, and it could be possible choice as well. It seems like a good platform for what you use your PC for, but as with any new major launch, there will be a few headaches to deal with. But like Kush120 already mentioned, if you game more than anything else, the 7700k is one of the best choices at this point in time.

AMD's next Ryzen CPUs in their lineup will also be released in April as well:

If the reasoning behind going X99 is the CPU requirements of Dolphin, I'm pretty sure you're making a mistake. From all I've read, Dolphin is pretty much exclusively single threaded, in which case you want the highest clock speed and IPC possible, and more cores will likely pull performance down, not up. With that kind of budget outside of a GPU and PSU, you could spring for a binned and delidded 7700K from Silicon Lottery, which seems to be the way to go if you want/need the highest possible clock speeds without actually gambling on getting a good OC chip from a regular store.

i7 7700k makes sense... I really don't see any reason for paying for 2 slower cores... any particular LGA 1151 mobos in mind?

Good thought UsandThem about waiting for Intel's response. I'll get a general idea of what I want now, and see how prices look in the upcoming months.

Highest single core speed with enough power for VR in the future would be the i7-7700K.

But since you can wait, on April 11 we'll see what the Ryzen 1600X at $249 is like, and whether or not intel decides to drop prices to compete with it.

The only reason to go Z270 is for overclocking and fast memory support. For most use cases (and most games) on Intel platforms, memory speed hardly matters at all. Then again, 3000GT/s memory costs pretty much the same as 2400 these days. Still, if you're not planning on overclocking, there's little/no reason to not choose B250 or a similar "not high-end" chipset. Performance on cheaper boards is typically the same (or even better, due to fewer components complicating the boards), with all the features typical users need. Just make sure to get a board with a PCIe 3.0 x4 m.2 slot if you at some point want a blazing fast SSD.

If you are overclocking (you do say you want to, so ...), there are still affordable Z270 boards out there. Z170 also (usually) works with Kaby Lake with a BIOS update, but it's hard/impossible to know wether the board ships with an up-to-date BIOS, and flashing without a CPU installed is usually not possible. Don't go overkill on the motherboard unless there are specific high-end features you want/need - even basic motherboards these days are usually pretty good. Most high-end boards have you paying through the nose for features of dubious worth like RGB LEDs, steel-reinforced RAM slots (there's an argument for reinforced PCIe slots relieving slot stress from heavy GPUs, but RAM? even for EMI shielding, that's not needed) and fancy board/IO shrouds and heatsinks. Of course, read reviews.

My procedure is usually this: decide on a feature set and price range, look at available options, decide on a first and second choice (or more if applicable), and start googling reviews. Googling "[motherboard name] issues/crash/instability/RMA" is usually always a good idea - the more hits (and the more believable/less PEBKAC the issues) the more you stay away.

I second waiting out to see how the AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs turn out. They launch on this Tuesday... so by the time you are ready to build / buy. You'll definitely see what Intel has pulled out of their hat OR if AMD has kept the thrown in the price / performance department.
