1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Gaming, mostly MMO's, other RPG's and FPS's--I like to run on the highest setting possible.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$1200-1600, but just looking to get the most for my money, if that means going lower quality for what I'm using it for based on expert's recommendations, then so be it.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

US of A

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.

n/a

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Would prefer intel core i5 or i7 and nvidia graphics

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

probably just my power supply - 850w truepower quattro

also have geforce GTX 560ti, but probably not worth saving at this point

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Haven't ever O/C'd before, but would like to have the option.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?

Probably 1920 x 1080 to begin with, but would like capability of 2560 x 1440 and also 4k territory in the future

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.

Probably around Christmas to early Jan 2015

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?

Will just use my copy of windows 7 until windows 10 comes out--does windows 7 have RAM limitations on what it will recognize? Probably run 8 gig for now, but maybe 16 in the future depending on recommendations

64-bit Windows 7 is theoretically capable of addressing 17,179,869,184 GB of RAM, though Microsoft artificially limits Home Premium to 16GB and Professional to 192GB. Windows 8 increased those limits and I imagine that Windows 10 will increase them further.

The TruePower Quattro might not hang with some of the newest units in terms of reliability, but it is a quality unit and easily reusable.

It's hard to give specific parts recommendations for a build that is at least a month out. Deals change all the time and the best value shifts with them. Here's an overall sketch:

i7 4790K $300
Reasonable Z97 motherboard $120
DDR3 16GB $130
GTX 970 $330
256GB SSD $120
2TB HDD $70
Reuse PSU
Reasonable case $80
Total $1150

That's at the low end of your budget range. To be towards the higher end, you could add another GTX 970 for SLI and/or bump the SSD capacity to 512 GB.

The GTX560Ti is getting a little long in the tooth... I know, I have one! If you like to play with everything turned up, it's time to retire the old card, and with your budget it shouldn't be a problem. I would buy one GOOD card vs two maybe lesser cards.

Probably around Christmas to early Jan 2015
We are headed into the yearly sales frenzy with Black Friday and the Christmas sales, if you can bump up your timetable you can probably save a little money on the build, or maybe get a better component or two for the same amount of money. I've built 2 rigs with 'Black Friday parts' and did pretty well, just have a grocery list of the parts you are looking for and make sure you check those specs before hitting the 'buy' button.

Thanks for the replies, all! Really appreciate the advice. I have a more expensive case that I have my eye and I will probably just also keep my 1TB external HD and reuse that instead of one listed above. Total updated.

Also, do I need to worry about any aftermarket cooling for processor or other?

At stock speeds the Intel cooler included is fine. If you decide to OC... then you will need an aftermarket cooler like the CoolerMaster 212 EVO or the like. For ~$30 you can get one now and install it... it will save the hassle of pulling the mobo later.

decided to upgrade the build a bit--in the near future I would like to try a racing game setup with the wheel/stick/pedals on one of our bigger tvs so I would like to run some high resolutions. Also, would like to add another 980 in the next few months if need be. Build as follows:

Thermaltake Chaser A71 VP400M1W2N Black SECC ATX Full Tower Case
139.99

MSI X99S MPOWER LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
299.99

Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 Desktop Processor BX80646I74790K
299.99 after rebate

MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card
559.99 after rebate

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4-19200) Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G4D240FSA
193.99 After rebate

SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
229.99 after rebate

Total:
1723.94 after rebates

What do you guys think? Overkill? Good synergy between parts? I'm open to suggestions.

Wouldn't you want to go with a Z97 mb for that processor? Or, get something like a Haswell-e 5820K if you want to keep that mb? Since you are also getting DDR4 memory, you probably want a 5820K or a 5930K.

Most TV's are 1080p or 4K. However, the 4K TV's generally can't handle a 4k@60Hz signal, so you're stuck running 1080p anyway. Also, increasing the resolution does not increase CPU requirements.

Regarding the parts you have listed, the CPU and mobo aren't compatible. The CPU is Socket 1150 and the mobo is socket 2011-3. That being said, you don't really need a Socket 2011-3 rig for gaming anyway.

Here's what I would go with assuming you are buying soon:

i5 4790K + Gigabyte GA-Z97-UD3H-BK combo $387
G.Skill DDR3 1600 16GB $120
MSI GTX 980 4GB $550 AR
Crucial MX100 512GB $205
Reuse PSU $0
Fractal Design R5 $110
Zalman CNPS10X $18 AR
Total: $1390 AR

I didn't include an HDD or ODD since you didn't, but the build can of course accommodate both.

Thanks guys, I didn't even realize that processor wasn't compatible. I'll go with the z97 since I have already ordered that processor and I think it will be plenty of processing power for me. I've heard it isn't a huge upgrade from ddr3 ddr4 ram anyway. What other reasons would you want to upgrade to the x99 other than the higher level intel processors and ddr4 ram?

I like that case you suggested, still not sure which I want.

Here it is updated:

ASRock Z97 OC Formula LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard 179.99 AR

Everything you listed out is good except for the mobo and RAM. The mobo is a waste of money compared to the Gigabyte that I listed unless you need a specific feature that it has. The RAM is a straight up waste of money because higher RAM speeds do not give a real-world benefit in games. It's also only marginally compatible with Intel processors because it runs at 1.6V instead of the recommended 1.5V.
