I have a Habu, and love it, but it's my second one. They keep dying on me, but MicroSoft is great about replacing them for free. My third one should be arriving soon in the mail.

My Razer Copperhead died on me a while back, so I replaced with a Logitech G5. So far I love it.

MX518 trumps the G5/Copperhead in tracing performance, last I checked. So unless you have a glass desk, I'd go with either the MX518 or the Razor Diamondbacks.

Quick questions about gaming mouses. Are the Logitech Revolution mouses good for this kind of thing? And are these gaming mouses only good for like FPSes?

Careful of the Copperheads. I went through 2 with Razer and the same problem kept coming up. After a 2-3 months of use, single clicks will start registering as double clicks. It will come to the point where it'll piss the hell out of you. It turns out to be mechanical, not software related. I Google'd and it apparently occurs mostly on their Copperheads.

Using a one thumb button G5, it's very nice and precise since it's laser. The weights are really nice and actually make a difference. Support for the extra buttons in games is "difficult", but I've never found a use for anything beyond the standard 3; even when I get it to work, I can't think of what to bind to them.

Even better, Razer has a new sensor that trumps the MX-518's LED based sensor. Can be used on glass because it's Infrared, and is used in the DeathAdder and new Diamondback 3g.

One downside of the MX518 is its somewhat subpar driver support. For some strange reason, it doesn't support game profiles even though the G5 and newer mice do. It's also dependent on the driver to do the sensitivity switching unlike Logitech's newer mice, so you have to run the SetPoint program in the background all the time.

I've heard that Logitech has artificially disabled the game profiles in the MX518 driver, but I haven't looked into if or how they can be turned on.

I sometimes find that the full eight (six if you don't count the sensitivity buttons) aren't enough. If they made a wired version of the MX610, which has a ton of buttons, and put the MX518 or G5 sensor hardware into it, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

With most new optical/laser mice, performance is going to be pretty similar from model to model, unless you need insanely high DPI or something. What matters most, to me at least, is finding what fits your hand comfortably and you can use the best, which you can't gauge without feeling mice in person at Best Buy or what have you.

Though I'm still throwing in my recommendation for the Logitech MX518, had mine for years now and it's never given me a problem once and feels great in my hand.

Thats what I have now and its my favorite. And thats after having owned the Viper, Diamondback and a crapload of unimpressive Microsoft and Logitech mice.

I'm having issues with the feel of the mouse. I've used a MX700 for 4 years now, and that shape feels super comfy to me. The hard lines of the G9 just don't feel right. I'm hoping I get used to it, because other than that, the performance and features are great.

I also used an MX700 for years until it started flaking out with the double-click problem others talk about. Currently using an MX Revolution that Logitech sent me as a warranty replacement, which is nice, but a bit heavy and unbalanced for gaming. The Shape is pretty good except the thumb button's area, where the sharp edge and thin/stiff buttons don't provide proper counter-balance when using those keys.

I'm hoping Logitech comes out with another cordless version of the G9 but last I heard there was no plans to. I would've gotten the G7 long ago if it had 2 thumb buttons but it doesn't seem like its getting an update like the G5 did. Makes me wish I got an MX1000 when they were available, as it seems like the best compromise between the MX700 and current wireless mice. I'm really hoping someone puts an analog thumb stick or even a d-pad (similar to the Nostromo) on a gaming mouse. Now that would be awesome!
