One important thing that I always like to note... let me save you time, there isn't a scene at the end of the movie. Most people in the theater seemed rather disappointed by that.

Saw it last night. I had very high expectations for the movie and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. It is well made in terms of building suspense over the first hour, and I thought the character development (particularly Cranston's) was very effective, but there are severe pacing problems and the way it was edited took away most of the real fear. I also felt the lead was pretty charmless, which stood in sharp contrast to the empathy that Cranston and Binoche had built up. Overall I would give it a 3/5.

While I enjoyed the movie, I definitely agree with you. Although, I did think that some of the stuff between Cranston's character and his wife felt a little odd. The one that really stood out to me was when they were in the car at the beginning, and Cranston is talking about the odd stuff he's been noticing, and his wife is just, "Did you forget? It's your birthday!" *smooch smooch smooch!* It just felt so... odd... especially since she just mentioned it to him earlier... like 10 seconds before that earlier.

Johnson's character definitely wasn't written that effectively. You just weren't really given a reason to care about him and Miss Olsen. Essentially, the script tries to use their kid as the emotional crutch to engage the audience, but doesn't even manage to do that well.

Cranston was clearly frazzled by the shit going on at the factory, which explains that whole scene. I mean he totally forgot his birthday.

I'm really surprised they killed off Cranston so early. Honestly, the character that truly got the emotional investment going was Godzilla - you actually felt bad for the guy.

Eh, I just figured he was more preoccupied. Maybe it's one of those weird "relationship dynamics" that a single nerd cannot begin to fathom!

Yeah, it was a bummer to just see his character die in such a sudden and arguably anticlimactic way. I agree with you about Godzilla though. I recall thinking, "No! Godzilla, get up!!!" after the building fell on him, and "No! Godzilla, you can do eeet, bite his fricken' head off!" when they started double teaming him. Then when he started glowing, and I was a bit confused as to what was going on!

yep, that's the exact feeling!

All I got say is, he is bad ass. The movie story line is well written and the movie is well acted. Best movie so far this year. They got this one right, it totally kicks ass.

totally agree that they spent waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on stuff OTHER THAN the thing that they named the movie after. Almost the first whole hour doesn't have any monsters whatsoever let alone Godzilla. It's a monster movie, give me monsters, don't give me some stupid drama about the family stuff, that should have been secondary to the monsters but they made it more important. The actual monster parts were very redeeming though, great effects and as usual 3D sucks, added nothing so don't worry about needing to see it in 3D. Save your money. Too bad this movie was lacking monster action, would have made it a much better movie.

Go see Jaws. Tell me how many times you see the shark in the first hour. Then tell us how it sucked because there wasn't enough of the shark.

Not even close to the same comparison. How many times does Jaws kill someone before you ever get a good look? How many times does Godzilla kill someone before you get a good look. Godzilla just seriously needed to lay off the family drama and stick to Godzilla. Jaws doesn't have the whole first hour of the movie dedicated to some dumb family drama and then when Godzilla finally shows up after almost a full hour going by, they STILL cut away all the time for more family drama. Jaws didn't have any of that. That's why Jaws is still one of the best movies ever and this new Godzilla isn't even in the same league.

Legendary has confirmed a sequel to Godzilla for 2016 release.

Sweet, I was worried it would be 3 years, which seems to be the typical time frame for a sequel nowadays.

Hopefully they'll bring back one of his traditional foes: Rodan? King Ghidorah? I think Mothra wouldn't work as well, a little too campy.

This.

This movie was mostly 75% family bullshit\drama and 25% actual monster encounters.

Jaws plays off the simple fact that you can actually get eaten\bitten by a shark. Godzilla can not.

Just saw the movie yesterday. The first 2/3's of the movie kind of drags, but the last 1/3 TOTALLY makes up for it

I kind of wish Bryan Cranston didn't die- he was the most interesting character. All of the characters were pretty cliche though- the scientist nobody believes, the military hero with a focused specialty that advances the plot, the brave wife that stays behind and fights the local battles...but like I said, the final monster battle made it all worth it. The single scene where Godzilla shoots fire down Rodan's(?) throat would have got my ticket money alone

Excellent movie.

Wonderful addition to the Godzilla movie line. I look forward to the same quality in sequels.

Heck, bring on invading aliens with their own monsters,.. or, a race of subterranean humans sending MUTOs at surface humans.

Maybe even a golem like Godzilla from the MUTO 'wranglers'??

Also, Godzilla's invulnerability to human weapons is wonderful - especially since we are now getting full blown special effects of cannons and shells and not just minature set explosions.

Disagree about the acting... a lot of it was really bad. I liked Cranston, and I guess Ford + his wife were fine, but Ken Wantanabe as the scientist/doctor and most of the military folks around him were abysmal. There was one part where I physically cringed because the delivery was so bad. The thing is I know he's a good actor, I've seen it. It almost seemed like he was over-acting on purpose to get the old B-monster-movie vibe, but nobody else got the memo so he just seemed really out of place. I just don't understand what he was doing, and why nobody else acted the same way.

This, very much this. A lot of fluff and bullshit that wasn't well acted enough to spend that much time with it. The monster encounters were all pretty badass though, so it was worth seeing in the theaters once. Probably won't see it again though.

So is the consensus that 3D version is much better than 2D? or worth it? I've never seen a 3D movie in a theater. Should I do it for Godzilla?

I saw it in 3D but don't remember any big reasons to go that route. The monster fights are going to look good regardless so I'd save the money

saw it last night in 3d. the 3d added nothing to the movie, i only saw it in 3d becaus the time was better than the 2d version. the movie was pretty meh to me. it was just totally different than what i had expected. i'd give it a solid 5/10. i was disappointed for sure though.

this is the first movie i've seen in the theater since iron man 3 and since i have set up my home theater. this will probably be the last time for a while (especially in the theater i saw it in). the screen was dirty or scratched or something. you cuold see it nearly every scene, and it messed with the 3d because you would focus on it. my wife noticed it big time too. the sound was awful. it was like it was down low and the surround wasn't even working. then when there was some bass, you could hear a vent rattling. oh, and the seats were terrible too.

definitely not going to be seeing a movie in that theater again. i think im going to complain to AMC about it too.

EDIT:

i just filed a complaint on their site, maybe i'll get free passes to another theater, but it won't be that theater for sure.

EDIT2:

i agree 100% with quite a few people above saying there is too much family drama in this movie. the first 1/2 of it is kind of a snooze fest. then when you finally see the monsters, i feel like it wasn't that much of them. i just wanted to see monsters fuck up shit, i don't care about the terrible actor who played the military guy and his family. everyone wants their family to survive, they didn't feel special at all. even my wife commented at how he seemed like such a pussy for a military guy with his soft ass voice. he reminded me of toby mcguire.

I saw it in 2D. Found it really boring and kind of stupid. I liked Godzilla the actual creature and enjoyed Elizabeth Olsen of course, but the lead kid was terrible, and the rest of the movie was just very stupid, blah, and uninteresting.
