New GPU OS won't boot.

Hey,

So I recently got the GTX 560 and quickly installed it into my Dell XPS 8300 but unfortunately it didn't work. The OS (Windows 7) simply won't boot.
I'm sure that the PC recognizes the card as there's a flash of text (details about my card) right before it jumps to this:

It just sits there with that screen on it's face.

I thought the problem was my PSU, which has this configuration:

And my case with the 560:

The card says it needs 2 of these connectors; so I hooked these two up...but they come from the same wire, so I'm not sure about that.

Again, as you probably noticed, new to the forums and computers.
Thanks for the help!

I think its ok. What did you use before? iGPU or another discrete card?

Did you do any BIOS updates?

What are the specs of the rest of the computer, like CPU in particular? How old is the computer?

Is that PCIe PCIe connector (with black and yellow leads) attached directly to the PSU or coming from an adapter connected to another kind of connector?

If that's actually from the powers upply, another possibility for powering the card would be to use only one of those connectors, and then use the adapter that your video card should have come with to draw power from two molex (wide plastic, usually white) connectors feeding one PCIe connector.

It's a Dell XPS 8300 about a year old. It has an i7 2600 and 6GB of ram. I didn't get anything else with the card except some HDMI adapters.

I'd pull the card out and make sure the system boots without the card. The fact that you have an image on the screen suggests that the card is actually functioning, but the system can't get into the OS for some reason, potentially power-related, but also potentially due to something else.

By the way, your memory configuration is very odd. Did Dell actually ship that with two 3GB sticks? Do those even exist? If it's an odd number (which Dell, HP, and other OEMs are known to do, despite the major drawbacks of doing so), I'd pull all but one stick out and try booting both without and then with the 560.

Is it locked up or can you hit f2 and go into the bios screen with the new card? I doubt you'll run into a power issue until you actually run a game.

Yeah my RAM is a little screwed up; I'll try that though.
I just updated my BIOS, should I try to install the card in again?

Try booting with your old card to make sure the BIOS update worked. Then try with new card. If that doesn't work, pull all but one RAM stick out and try booting again.

so I updated my BIOS, and it worked with the old card but the same problem persists with the new card. I think I'll try to pull out the ram.
I'm on another ccomputer so keep posting any useful tips!
thanks

I had a Dell XPS 8300 and it came with 2 x 1GB & 2 x 2GB for a total of 6GB. Dual channel with all 4 slots filled.

I'm out of ideas, unfortunately. If you can return the card, I think that's your best option. Another card to try which is more likely to be compatible due to lower power requirements is the AMD HD7770, or better yet the HD7750, which requires no power connectors.

Even if it's not a power problem, you'll have on your side the fact that a previous AMD card worked in your system.

The only return on this card unfortunately if it's "defective". Hopefully it is and it's not my PSU that's the trouble.

Well, the trouble with computer upgrades is that it's sometimes very hard to figure out what the "defective" part is until you try each component is a different system. I think you have a good argument that the card didn't work in your system and so it's "defective," but it could also be an odd incompatibility that none of us have thought of.

Even if your PSU isn't the greatest, the 7750 will pose absolutely no problem for it, and is still a nice upgrade from what you had.

Thanks for the effort, Termie.

Sure thing.

No, win7 just use generic one until you update the driver.
Another thing did you try the card on another machine?

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager.

Find your Video Adapter, uninstall it. Then reboot, turn off computer (hold power button) after Windows closes. Take out old card, install new card. Reboot. See what it does.

If you get into Windows, it was just a driver error.

If same behavior as presently, it's either the new card is bad or it's not getting enough power from your PSU.

Does your 560 have 1 or 2 six-pin plugs? How many Watts is your PSU rated for? If you have photos above, sorry, I cannot see them, work filters... :/

Yep, BIOS simply dont finish init for whatever reason. Either the BIOS doesnt like the card, card is defective or its not getting enough power. But usually GFX cards works in 2D when not getting enough power. Not to mention showing other errors.
