Hi,

The current X800 and 6800 series chips have been out for a while, yet I don't recall seeing any news about a new chip from either company.

Everything seems quite.... too quite...

Is there any public information on the next generation of chips?

x950 coming out soon.(confirmed...sorta.)
also roumors(highly doubtful) that the newest g70/r5xx will be 2-3x more powerful. they will have something liek 24pixel pipes and 16 vertex shaders or something(maybe 32pipes 24shaders) clocked at something like 800mhz core/1.8ghz mem.

like they state why pay all that money for cards that offer little upgrade from there closes predicessors?

6800/x800 series hasn't been out THAT long..

And besides, they will both run ANYTHING at super high resolutions.

Yeah, everything but UE3.0 . UE3.0 won't be out for a while yet anyway, and by that time, the 6800s and X8x0s will be bigtime obsolete by then.

Nice. Now STFU?
ATI have recently been telling developers that six vertex shaders is more than enough for a modern GPU
Please be quiet unless you actually have something with evidence.

UE3 will be out sometime in mid to late 2006. You seem to be giving the 6800/X800 cards a much shorter lifespan than all the previous cards. Radeon 9700 Pro came out in 2002 right? It can still run ANY game at 1024X768 at max settings.

True, but it has been seen that the 6800s and X8x0s will run UE3.0 at VERY slow speeds. Some early tests were done with a 6800U, and it could only run the engine at 640x480 with max settings at about 15FPS. Thats pretty sad, but as I said, the 6800s and X8x0s will be pretty much obsolete by then. Not saying they're bad cards, as I have one myself, but when UE3.0 comes out, it will make those cards look like GeForce2 MX's.

Note your key phrase "early tests".
When the game actually comes out, it will be polished, complete, and tweaked. It will run just fine on the GF6 series.

When the Doom3 Alpha was leaked, the top of the line card of that time, a 9700Pro, could do the same thing - 640x480@~15FPS. When Doom 3 was finally released, it did a lot better. I'm guessing the same would happen with UE3

Yes, but the D3 Alpha ran like shite on everything. In case you don't remember, the D3 demo was first shown on an R300. It ran fine when id showed it, but it ran horribly on any other machine. The reason I said what I said is because UE3.0 was shown with a build that was on one of DE's (Digital Extremes) own machines, and it ran that bad.

I was just over-exaggerating my point. By the time UE3.0 rolls out, then anyone running a 6800\X8x0 will be in serious need of an upgrade anyway. Actually, I think that the 6800's\X8x0's will be about on par (performance wise, at least) with what GF4 Ti 4600's are like today. They aren't "craptastic", but they are FAR behind the times as far as performance and features go. Just trying to prove a point, thats all.

maybe 9800 pro and even thats a bit extreme if u ask me

The problem is, graphics technology is increasing at a faster rate than anything before 2003. I believe the 6800/X800 will not be obsolete, merley "mid-end", by 2006

Perhaps. Truthfully, I sure as hell hope you're right, 'cause I'm not looking to upgrade much anytime soon.

You skipped a generation... so you mean it will be on par with cards 2 generations old?

I don't mean as far as features, I mean PURE PERFORMANCE. Maybe the featureset will be like 2 generations old, but I am betting not. I just mean that the performance of these current generation cards will be roughly 2 generations old (again PERFORMANCE ONLY) by the time UE3.0 rolls out.
