Police are only a threat to stupid people, and the whole world is generally a threat to them anyway. Show your hands, don't do anything stupid.

Meh.

I always hop out of the car and wander around to the back to chat to them. Unless it's raining, buggered if I'm getting out in the rain.

Yea, but you don't have retards that think they're SEALs, but wouldn't even pass the written application.

There is that.

Then again they don't really have to worry about the guy in the car pulling a gun on them I suppose.

Yeah, agree with Viper, I was always taught to do so; No sudden moves, hands where they can see'em, answer clearly and to the point

this. i hope that if i act this way on the rare occasion i get pulled over they are at least as comfortable as possible when dealing with me.

i am astounded by police videos where someone gets pulled over and immediately starts to get out of their car. i do not understand why people do that.

Any one of us may be called upon to pay the ultimate sacrifice for the perceived safety of a policeman at any time. Don't you dare consider defending yourself!

Yeah, agree with Viper, I was always taught to do so; No sudden moves, hands where they can see'em, answer clearly and to the point... and it all made sense, seems common sense. I never saw the police as any type of threat, in my experience, if I am courteous, using common sense and doing nothing wrong, they will just do their job and leave. They are the police, don't try to be a smart ass.

I also agree with Viper. And, they're not stopping you for shit and giggles (usually) - they're stopping you because you did something wrong.

This is an another infringement of rights.
If One was to do research,I'd bet there were more wrongful deaths caused by police in that area than 2-3 within 3 years.

us vs them

instead of we

Ain't going to fix itself any time soon. This policy just drives a bigger wedge. Writing tickets for not "showing hands" is just another revenue stream. If the force chooses to enforce it alot of folks will bitch. Rightly so.

This policy is completely untenable because it's not universal. Since it's only policy in Topeka, what happens every time they stop an out-of-towner? Does a normal police stop suddenly become a high-tension situation because they out-of-towner doesn't know? Or do we get the police yelling through their bullhorns and terrifying people. Hands up? Because I didn't signal to make a right hand turn?

Yeah... no.

Because its normal behaviour in a lot of places? I bet it was normal behaviour in the States not too long ago as well.

Seriously, this is going to suck for a lot of tourists.

you know i could excuse the shooting of random people if they were at least held accountable instead of this bullshit good ole boy mentality of giving them every single benefit of the doubt merely because they could fill out a job application and attend 6 months of police academy bs that is easily accomplished by a reasonably fit woman. why the hell is this guy who beats his kid to death given low enough bail to get out? He clearly has the means and a damn good reason to flee... but he's a cop so it's OK to let him kill his child and walk free days later when he posts his bail. his wife is charged with neglect but gets to keep her fat pension as does her pig husband. fuck the police

ps - its not only when they shoot people, that is just their most egregious offense. they do all sorts of other ridiculous illegal and dangerous bullshit on a daily basis that gets zero attention because who are we gonna call? the cops on the cops??

I like the idea

of no police whatsoever.

Me too. Then no one could regulate our guns and we could all own motorcycles and fight gang wars over oil in a desert. I'm putting a mohawk on my helmet. :awe: It'll be awesome.

What is this, guilty until proven innocent? Yeah some of you are clearly in favor of this, which makes me throw up a little.

As much as I usually support police and empathize with their nightmare shithole job, this is not true. Police are supposed to be there to enhance and protect freedom, yes, and they often do, but that doesn't mean that's how it always plays out. And it only takes one bad apple to ruin or end your life.

In rural upstate New York this might even be true. But in urban areas a lot of people are stopped by police essentially trolling for troublemakers.

It just hit me that I haven't been pulled over since the 90's and I have dealt with 1 checkpoint (Motorcycles only to pester sportbike riders) back in 2004 ish (maybe)

I have no experience with directly dealing the current generation of police officers outside of social situations and day to day interaction (Transit, Starbucks)

As far as I'm concerned, they are just another state\county employee with a job to do.

Statistically speaking, they don't really have to worry about that here either. More innocent citizens are killed by cops than the other way around, but you don't see the cops trying to pass laws to make citizens any safer from cops.

Right, because cops never pull people over for being the wrong color in the wrong neighborhood.

Indeed. Also, because cops never pull EVERYONE over at traffic stops in hopes of catching illegal immigrants. And they DEFINITELY won't question you if you're more of a brown skin tone...

Sorry I should have phrased that better.

Cops over here can't use the excuse that they think someone might have a gun so often.

I don't know how the numbers work out on that specific point, but I think there has been a concerted effort since 9/11 to portray all police officers as heroic warrior first responders putting their lives on the line every day, and that's simply a myth. I've looked up the numbers of cops killed by assault while on duty and compared it to the total number of armed law enforcement officers. All of these numbers are estimates but the inescapable conclusion is that police are at greater danger driving to work before their shift, and more of them die from obesity than assault. None of this should be very surprising, because inflating our importance is basically what all humans do in all cases. However these humans work on an armed team and have the force of law behind them, so it is in our best interest to curb their natural desire to be special snowflakes.

I don't really have a big problem with this. I do it already as common courtesy - Windows down, dome lights on if it's dark, hands on the wheel until they are beside me and in conversation.

It's a stressful situation for everyone involved and making sure they know immediately that I'm not going to be a problem is in everyone's best interest.

It has served me well thus far, twice now I've left stop lights in the dark at full throttle with a cop right behind me, including once with wheelspin at the top of first. No tickets.
