New Hard Drive Problems

Hello this is my first post, im sure i will feel right at home here

Ok my problem is that I bought a new Hard Drive 2 days ago ( Maxtor/Quantom 20 gig 5400 rpm ) and it worked fine for the first 2 days. Last night i turned my computer off for the night and today morning when i tried to turn my computer ON it said my slave drive ( maxtor ) wasnt being detected. I couldnt load to windowsXP pro also cause while loading it said my IBM Deskstar ( Primary ) wasnt detected. So i unplugged the maxtor from the ATA cable and powersupply and i booted to windows with my IBM.

This is prolly the jumper settings but the jumper settings in the maxtor booklet on the Hard Drive itself didnt work, cause when i set the jumpers to slave, the HD wont be detected. So my friend told me to take the jumpers out and it worked fine ( but this was 2 days ago when i was installing my hard drive for the first time )

I tried putting the jumpers on " Cable Select Enabled " and that didnt work either and I did try the slave jumper settings from the IBM hard drive. None work so I took the jumpers out completly from the Maxtor and reboot and to my suprisement the HD was being detected by Bios and everything worked well and i booted to windows.

Now is there a chart or something to set the jumpers on the maxtor so it works well with the IBM Deskstar so I wont get this problem in the future?

I don't know about the Maxtor, but the IBM has a lable right on it that shows how to put the jumper on for Slave, Master, etc. I am guessing the Maxtor should have a similar label on it.

No it does have the label and I did notice it, i tried both jumper settings from both lables. None of them worked.

Generally, any drive that is the only one in the chain should have no jumpers installed. In your case, you have both a master and a slave on what I assume is the primary IDE channel. If your IBM drive is jumpered correctly, the Maxtor should be set to slave. If the maxtor only works without jumpers, I would guess that it doesn't see another drive. Any time two drives are installed on the same IDE channel only one of the controllers can work, the master. What drives do you see during the post? You were just lucky this time. Sooner or later the problem will be back. My guess, you do not have the IBM set correctly.

What mobo and BIOS?

I'm having a similar problem with my Abit KT7A RAID and the latest BIOS, and it isn't linked to any hard drive brand.
