New Hard Drive, what to do on OS install?

Just got my 7k320 from newegg, and now I'm looking at what to do in installing the new hard drive.

-Do I use a time machine backup to reinstall everything, sans my bootcamp partition (just windows 7)
-Do I use SuperDuper to clone my entire hard drive with bootcamp?
-Do I Just reinstall leopard straight up and copy over my apps and files?

Is there any reason I'd want to do a fresh install of Leopard? I've read that it doesn't really change anything, and I haven't found any problems with my current install.

The quickest method will be to use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to just clone your existing install over. You will need to have a way of hooking up the drive externally however.

I'll be going through similar thing myself this week. Since I just did a fresh install of Leopard I'm just going to do it through Time Machine.

why do you have to hook it up "externally" whats wrong with internal? or is it a laptop lol?

Heh, nevermind, i guess the 7k320 should give it away. I mean who says 7k for a desktop drive...

The only thing wrong with internal is that there is only 1 kind of real mac that can do internal, the Mac Pro. The iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and the Mac Mini all only can have 1 drive internal (I guess if you felt like doing too much work, and had a new MacBook/Pro you could put the new drive where the optical drive is... or just get an external.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe Super Duper, Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine support backing up a Boot Camp partition.

I think you need to use Winclone to do the backup. http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/

I voted Time Machine but if I was you i'd do a fresh install, FYI. Time Machine is nice though cause it will defrag the drive as its reinstalling it.

As will Carbon Copy Clone and SuperDuper. Specifically they will optimize the disk, making sure that you don't have fragmented free space (that is the worry on OS X, the files are generally all together, but free space could be spread all over).

I have no need to keep my bootcamp partition, I don't use it ever at the moment. I'm thinking I'll just Time Machine my files back, but I realized I can't do it today as I left my install disks at my office. I also need to pick up a Torx T8 screwdriver I just found out, as I need to remove the old hard drive from a case.

Grr.

Do you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro?

If MacBook, then the Torx screws actually have quite tall heads, so instead of this

it is this

|||------

So you should actually be able to use a pair of pliers to undo them

Hmm, it is the macbook. That's interesting, I'll have to take a look when I get home (or off of my laptop).

I am going to assume that this is the older plastic MacBook? I didn't think that the new ones use Torx on the drive.

Bah. They are the longer torx, but I can't seem to get them out with my needlenose or regular pliers. Guess it's time to see if anyone around has a torx screwdriver....
