New HD install gives black screen, no startup, help !!

I bought a new MAXTOR hardrive.
I connected the IDE cable, and the power plug, set the HD to slave, and on startup, black screen.
I disconnect the new HD, and startup to w98 is fine.
I even try to startup from the MaxBlast sw, and black screen,

Maxtor tells me the drive is dead.
I can fell vibration from it when its connected, I think its spinning, I try to hear it, cannot tell from the other HD and fans installed now.
I went into my Bios, and read what was master etc

You sure you plugged the IDE cable in completely, and the right way round?

Is the IDE cable intact, with all the wires making good contact with the connectors? Are the connectors broken?

Did you set the original HD to 'Master with slave present'? - this may be different to 'master without slave'

The drive could be dead, but I've never seen a dead drive stop a boot.

what ide channel is your CDRW in? secondary IDE? if so, the CDRW is set to master or slave? if the CDRW is set to slave, and you want to connect the hdd to the secondary IDE, you need to set the hdd to master.

Why don't you connect the new hdd to primary IDE channel together with your existing hdd? You should be able to set the new hdd to slave, connect it to the primary IDE channel together with your existing hdd.

The CDRW is on the secondary, and the cdrw is the master, I used to have a cd connected as slave, but removed it.

The current HD with w98 is master, and has a zip as slave to it now

OK, on the new hard drive remove ALL jumpers off of the drive. Next, disconnect your cdrom from your from the secondary IDE cable. Plug the hard drive into that cable and connect the power. Go into your bios and and set your Secondary master and slave settings to Auto. Save and exit. If it still does not boot up, there is a chance the drive is dead. Make sure that your bios can handle the size of the drive. There is NO master single or master with slave jumper settings on a Maxtor hard drive. Only Master (jump the two pins closest to the IDE plug-in, up and down)
