I just got done overhauling my system with a new processor, mobo, memory, PS, and Hard Drive.
I have a Western Digital 60gig. I have the hard drive set as Primary Master, and it connected directly to the mobo, nothing else is connected as slave, when the computer boots up, it says Detecting Primary Master...then it says none....when I go into the BIOS it says there is none, but when I got to Boot Sequence it has nothing listed for a HD, then after several seconds, my WD HD shows up. Then when you go back to the main screen it shows my WD for Primary Master....

I save the settings, but then again when it boots up it says that it doesn't detect anything on the Primary Master.

My hard drive also came with a floppy that has software on it that will format and partition the HD, when I ran that it also said that there was no Western digital product installed on my machine.

Any help appreciated

Make sure you're not using really long cables (I think IDE is suppose to be no more then 18" or so). Also with newer ATA/66 cables and up you have to have the bottom most plug into the motherboard first, then the next plug into the first drive, etc. I believe if you leave a space or try to use the cable backwards - it will give you problems.

Also a very long time ago some hard drives would only run if you enabled something called IDE TimeOut (or something similiar) in the BIOS. The BIOS would purposely pause when booting to allow time for the IDE drive to spin up and prepare to be initialezed by the BIOS. You might want to set that to something like 10sec (default is 0) and see what happens. Again that was used a lot if you had a really modern drive with a slow, older drive so the BIOS would wait for the older one, but it would be worth a try.

Sounds to me like you just plugged a new HD into the machine without setting up the HD with FDISK and FORMAT.

I have had this happen to me. It was the Master/Slave orientation. I had my jumper set to Master when the HDD was on the Slave connector of the ribbon. If you only have one HDD, the easiest thing to do is set the jumper on the HDD to CS... that should take care of it.

Thanks for all the help, I think I got it figured out....I jumped ahead of myself when I set the jumper for it. I had planned on adding my old HD to this system once I got everything running, so I had the jumper set up on the new HD to make it seem like there was 2 hard drives. So I moved the jumper so that it makes it the only Hard drive in the system...When I booted up and went into the BIOS it recognized it immmediatetly.
Now comes the task of partitioning, formatting, and installing OS... Thanks so much for the help
