Hi guys, I really need some quick help here...

This afternoon I was using my PC like normal, and everything was fine... I left the PC on and went to watch TV for like 1 hr... When I came back, the screensaver is on, but the computer wont respond at all! It wont respond to the keyboard or the mouse... so I went ahead and just manually reboot the PC...

Then here comes the worst part... After I press reset, the monitor went blank, then turned off completely (well not exactly turned off, but the light went yellow instead of green, which means it's not receiving any signals... it's a NEC FE700)! As for the PC, the power light comes on, my CD-roms light up (as usual), and my harddrive light comes on, then nothing... no beeps, no nothing... it's just sits there and do nothing... I repeated this many many times with the same results...

Then I went ahead and remove my video card, and repeat.. same results... then I went ahead and remove every card in my system, so all that's left are the CD-Roms, harddrive, RAM, and CPU... same results, still wont do anything...

Is my motherboard toasted? I did not install any new hardware or software for weeks... have made ANY changes recently... What should I do next to find out what the problem is?

I really need help guys... I need the computer for school work, and can't afford to lose it for 1 day... please help...

I forgot to mention my systems specs:

PII 300 (no overclocking)
Asus P2L97 motherboard
192MB RAM
Fujitsu 6.4GB harddrive
Creative 2240E DVD drive
Panasonic 4x/8x CDR drive

ATI Xpert 98 video card
AWE32 soundcard
Linksys 10/100 network card
Hollywood plus DVD decoder card

BTW, if it helps I can hear the harddrive running when the PC boots...

Try yanking everything but MB, proc, RAM, HS/F, and PS and see what happens. Then try pulling RAM if that's a no go. If you still don't get any beeps with the RAM out, reseat the processor. If still no go, reseat the power connectors to the MB. If still nothing, try a different processor. If after that you still don't get anywhere, you're probably buying a new board.

I have just pulled all the RAM out, and still no beeps...

I'll try reseat the processor and power supply connectors...

Also, what's HS/F?

Thanks for your suggestions...

hs/f is heatsink/fan. my guess would be the processor went lose. if that happens, then all the system does is power on, no POST(but only slot CPUs slip out, I never seen any sockets get loose before). Another thing that can cause this is the pin 1s on the IDE cables don't match, but if you haven't touched it for a while, this can't be it.

OK, I have tried pulling the CPU and power supply connector and plugging them back in... still no go...

Any more suggestions?

unplug everything
the only things getting power should be the motherboard and fans.
the only card should be video.
the chip, of course, is still in there
and ram too

nothing else should be plugged into the motherboard - no ide cables, cards, or whatever.

try that out
if it still doesnt work, start swapping the parts i listed up top

I have unplugged everything from the motherboard except power supply (ie. all IDE harddrive, CD-Rom and floppy connections are now gone), reset the CMOS by taking out the battery, but still no beeps...

I have tried installing only 1 stick of RAM and the video card, still no beeps... also tried removing the video card so only RAM, and CPU are in there, but also no beeps...

Looks like I will have to get a new motherboard, and possibly another CPU...

Update:

Turns out it was really the motherboard... I bought a new motherboard and CPU today and now everything is back up and running...

Thanks for everyone who helped me determine what the problem was!
