New home set up equipment suggestions

Good evening all,

Newbie here first off. Looking for some advice in some gear to build a home network that will have some growth potential.

I want to get a wired router to mount in the garage because that is where all the cat5 cables are already wired in a nice network closet. Then most likely use current wifi router as an AP in the house.

Currently only pay for 20mb internet and it speed test to that regular. So I dont need gigabit stuff, but Im figuring I will want it for future upgrades.

I have a NETGEAR N2000v2 in the garage now acting as my main router and have several rooms of the house plugged into it so I can plug ROKO and tv's in directly. At the entertainment center, I am using and old router as an switch (The wifi is dead in it) to plug in all the main entertainment systems.

Since the wifi router is in the garage, it doesnt work well in the house. My old router wont work anymore except as a switch.

I have been looking at some of the consumer gear and small business routers.

I found the TP-R860, which looks great and cheap, but I am not sold on the quality and its 100mb.

Also looking at the Ubiquiti Edgerouter lite, but I am not a network professional, but think I can get it to work.

Id like to build a wired unit in the garage, a switch if necessary, and an wifi AP.

Time to replace that router of yours. Also is there a etgernet jack more or less to the center of your house?

You can get a router with gigabit and turn off the wifi to use just as firewall and nat and a wireless access point somewhere central to the house. There is no price penalty on gigabit these days.

Or get a router turn off the wifi and replace the old router you are using as switch near tv instead of getting a wap.

May not be the ideal solution for those that need to have the latest and greatest but check out some routers from a few years ago. I just snagged a D-Link DIR-655 for $15 because I needed an upgrade from 802.11G & 10/100. It doesn't have Wireless AC but this router, for me, works like a dream. Expanded my wireless range & speed (an AP would do that for you, from the sound of it), but it also added gigabit. I didn't need anything faster than 802.11N as all I do wireless is stream locally stored content or Netflix so even 802.11N is overkill for me. The gigabit connections are great as I have a switch at the other end of my house (also upgraded to gigabit) that I have an Xbox One as well as my server on it so this upgrade helped greatly with file transfer times. I did all this for the price of a meal or two from McDonalds. There are other options out there, of course, but this one fit the bill for me wonderfully. Just an option, though, so do what fits you best.

If Gigabit and wireless AC are not necessary, this router has been phenomenal in the 3 times I have used it:
