Can anyone recommend me one of the better litterboxes for cat's? I have a $20 from walmart that is covered with a door. It keeps the smell under control, but makes a huge mess with the litter outside the box (I use the Arm and Hammer small crystals stuff) even though I have a mat that catches 90% of the stuff brought outside the box.

I don't mind paying a little bit for a nice "self cleaning" litter box that stays clean and keeps the litter inside the box.

Suggestions besides killing the cat?

You can get a litter box with an entry on top for them. Keeps everything inside.

Don't cedar chips work pretty well compared to the normal cat litter and even more since that stuff is very dusty.

It would be a strange cat that would accept cedar chips for litter :^D

I buy wood stove pellets from Home Depot. $5 per 40lbs. It's the exact same shit as Feline Pine, expect maybe 1/5 the price. Pretty much no tracking and there's little to no dust compared to clumping.

I switched my 3 cats from clumping clay to that because I was tired of litter tracking all over the place. With clumping litter it's basically impossible to totally eliminate tracking. The little granules are too easy to catch in their paws and kick out when they jump out of the box.

Best litter boxes I've used are this and this.

I've had 3 cats, and only 1 reluctantly would use Feline Pine. The other 2 refused it, and would pee in cardboard boxes, or in the corners. I finally had to give it up. My 2 cats now use a scoopable clay litter, I think it's Lasting Pride.

Edit:

For grammar

I spent two weeks transitioning my cats over....ages 4, 6 and 14. Less clumping and more pine everyday. There was an accident a day after I fully remove clumping from the equation, but just the once. I think it had more to do with one of my cats having problems passing his stool because he ate something he shouldn't have.

He was letting me know he was having problems. Kinda like when cats have UTIs, they'll pee where they shouldn't...and it'll be kinda crystalline.

In my cats' cases I think they'd rather use the pine than disgrace themselves by missing their toilet.

Litterboxes that we used back home: Cement-mixing pans from a hardware store + Tidy Cat clay litter (large granules, not the fine "scoopable" stuff).

Yes they'd track some out, but short of teaching the cats how to wipe their feet, I don't know of a good solution. (Well, besides the toilet training thing.)
