well, its been about 4 years since i last bought components for my home theater...young and inexperienced, so i thought it was time to treat myself to some fun new components.

After reading through yoyo's exhaustive guide and poking around the internet for a few days, here is what i am coming from and going to:

currently:
32" soyo lcd (1080i)
yamaha htr-5760
kenwood (ouch) 5.0 cheapo speaker set
KLH powered 12" sub (i love this thing)
ps3 connected via component

JUST ORDERED:
Philips 52PFL3603D 52" 120Hz 1080p LCD (sams club has a nice deal here)
Onkyo tx-sr606 receiver
Polk Audio Monitor 30 x2
Polk Audio Monitor 50 x2
Polk Audio CS1
cables galore from mono price (speaker, hdmi, banana jacks...)
KLH powered 12" sub (i love this thing)
ps3 now rockin some hdmi

newegg was just having too good of a deal on the polks. they should do the job until the itch hits again and i can follow my "upgrade path"

one downside is the onkyo wont let you run a PC video output through hdmi for some reason...

thoughts?

will probably take some pictures as time progresses, hoping to do it up nice

When you said PC video through HDMI what do you mean? I don't know why you would send anything from a PC to that TV besides 1920x1080p60, and the Onkyo will pass that just fine.

pc dvi -> hdmi on the receiver for video switching. thought i read somewhere the owners manual states this will not work.

here is where i read it, under cons. everything on the internet must be true, right? guess i'll have to wait and see if it works. might just be one users gripe with a non HDCP compliant video card?

If I read that correctly, it doesn't accept HDMI input from a computer when you use a DVI -> HDMI adapter on the video card, which makes sense because when you use DVI > HDMI there is no audio being carried for the receiver to transmit to your speakers

right, but video switching should still work when using a dvi -> hdmi cable, and then just run optical for audio. but supposedly this receiver doesnt handle that.

I suspect it was an HDCP worry or they are just trying to prevent people from using one of those cables and expecting audio so they just claim it wont work.

As far as the original post though, that should be a pretty nice setup.

Nice setup Skiddex

Are you getting stands or wall mounts for your surrounds?

Well as long as you don't murder me afterward (or before... or during...) you can come over and watch a movie / listen to a demo disc / whatever.

If you were to get rockets, where would you end up putting them?

You should probably try playing with the placement of your existing speakers before you think about upgrading. I didn't look up the dimensions of the Polks you have there, but I'd bet the 850s and Bigfoot would not fit as nicely in that space assuming that's where you're going to end up putting them. They'll both work better if farther away from the walls (not that it's an easy thing to do in a living room)

i definitely need to get stands for the rears as the main driver just points right into the side of the couch. I was also going to play around with swapping the left front with the audio cabinet and right speaker with the sub. the fronts sit about 18 in" from the rear wall and i have the front of the speakers extending past the front of the fire place. I used the Audyssey setup and that made huge differences in the sound. night and day. obviously if i move speakers around, i should run that again.

the rocket center will be about 5 in" taller than the polk center so i'd have to move the tv up a bit. the rs850's are about 10 in" taller with a foot print about twice that of the polks.
