Gateway doesn't care who makes their equipment these days...they cut corners and buy what's cheap. But keep in mind, a monitor is very simple... It has a tube and a set of controls. Those are about the only things that go bad...either a power swith or vhold or the tube itself. >>
What in the world?
I used to repair monitors/televisions. Very rarely do controls go bad, especially on the current microprocessor-controlled monitors where the only controls are momentary switches. Most common problems are shorted transistors, burned resistors, flyback transformers, and leaky capacitors. Often one part will go, and take out many other parts in the SMPS. I have never had a power switch or control ever go bad. A weak SMPS is the most common problem I've seen, and I've had a few with flakey microprocessors too.
Quality of components and how well designed the SMPS is determines the longevity and reliability of a typical monitor.
BTW, SMPS = Switch Mode Power Supply.
