Once again... sez who? Unless somone has physically tried and PROVED such then dont say it. My 640 supposedly only runs in an i915 and i925 / XE yet it does just fine in my i865PE.

so you run your socket 775 P4 640 in the physically incompatible Socket478 (i865) board?

oh wait, I see, I also run my AMD Barton 2600+ in the i925xe and I could turn on Hyperthreading too... joy oh joy oh joy.

would someone slap this guy back to reality?

lmfao

There are LGA775 boards with the i865 chipset.

Link

Good one.

EDIT: link dont work

Fixed (hopefully)
If this doesn't work, then just search Newegg for "865 LGA775." Although, as of right now only the 945 and 955 chipsets support dual core Pentiums, and possibly nForce4 Intel Edition.

Smithfield is LGA775. The incompatability of Smithfield surrounds the power requirements. My N0 prescott breaks 170W on load so I seriously doubt Ill be challenged by something as small as 130W from Smithfield.

Now there could be a compatabiliy which forces Smithfield to run with only one core. Thats entirely possible but until somone actually tries it, I'd dismiss what Intel and others have to say. I'd wait for a response from Abit or DFI

sez Intel.

Dont be so quick to dismiss what I said.......
Ever heard of a hybrid board? DFI makes one as does Abit and many others. Hell you can even find S478 boards with PCI-E slots on i915 chipsets.

Its ok tho, I realize that your knowledge of Intel is limited since you are running AMD.

I *realize* that Intel says its incompatable, but they say the same EXACT thing about N0 Prescotts used in hybrid boards. No issues here to speak of

Tom's mentions that here

"Many things will change when Intel formally introduces the dual core desktop processor Smithfield in Q2/2005. First of all, you will need to purchase a new motherboard, since the dual core processor requires a modified boot sequence in order to determine whether a single or a dual core processor is deployed. Unfortunately, a BIOS update isn't sufficient, since this requires slight pinout changes."
