Reduced vulnerability? Just learn how to operate a computer. I did that years ago. I've run without spyware/virus protection forever, and never get anything. Just to keep things in check, I will install anti-virus/spyware software once every couple months to do a quick check, and I've turned out clean for years.

Then don't get a Mac (assuming you don't need the other software I alluded to). But there are many, many people who will not or can not learn "how to operate" a computer.

Though given how many issues there are with Windows boxes, it's fair to say the issue is not simply a matter of user incompetence.

$1300 for a computer with 512MB of RAM and a slow 8x DVDRW drive that only does 2.4x DL? Ridiculous, Core Duo or not.

FTW.

Wow, what a great idea! While Apple's stock has risen like 700% in the last five years, and Microsoft's stock has more or less rose like 0%, that Steve Jobs must still be an idiot for not thinking of doing what you and a zillion other people has suggested.

Apple's stock vs Microsoft

Have you even look at the new iMac? It's all in one design, with all the components fits into the "monitor". I am not going to say that's good or bad, but with the compact design, it make the new iMac nothing like the ordinary PC, but more like a laptop. The manufacturing cost for such computer, the design Apple put into it, for $1300 it isn't too bad. I know there are people who like to work on the PC, and don't mind having big PC box sitting around and cables running all over. But there are also people who just want to have a working computer, not to mess with it and not have box, cables all around their desk.

Here is a pretty good direct comparison:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/12/review_acer_8204wlmi

Acer Travelmate 8204WLMi

has a 1.3 mp rotating digital camera in the top of the lid.
2.0Ghz Intel Duo
15.4" widescreen (1680x1050)
2GB Ram
X1600 (256MB Ram)
120GBHD
DVD+/-R DL drive that does (8x DVD+/-R 2.4x DVD+R DL 5x DVD-RAM 24x CD-R 10x CD-RW)
ProWireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)
DVI-D, S-video, D-SUB, 2 USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet
IrDA, 4-pin firewire, port replicator socket, Bluetooth
Bluetooth VoIP phone
6.7lbs
More than one mouse button
Retail price is $2499

The features are so similar, I'm sure they're manufactured by Asus (who I heard the MacBook Pro is supposed to be manufactured by)

Gah! to all of you nay sayers. I've been looking forward to this for a while. 1st off, those processors are not cheap. They are SEVERAL times faster than the Powerbooks and they consume ~the same power (or so Apples benchmarks say). Second, you are not just buying the hardware, you are buying the software as well. Don't forget that "Apple Office" comes with the computer as well. That in and of itsself is worth ~$300. There are several well designed apps that you would not get on the PC.

Now I will say there is such a thing as the "Mac Tax", but I would say it's no more than 10-20% than an equilivent PC would cost. That's roughly the difference of buying something at retail vs. buying it off of Amazon. And it's not like that money is just thrown away. Most of apple's hardware is well designed and in a very small/quiet formfactor. Not to say that apple doesn't have it's share of screwups everyonce in a while.

I'm really hoping to see some 3rd party benches, battery life, and some user reviews. I want to buy one so bad........

Folks, your not comparing like for like, kind of what Gast said.

These are LAPTOP processors in an Apple Dekstop. They aren't the P4 that are so cheap. If you want a fair price comparison, compare them to equivalent laptops from any of the WINTEL camps.

Here's a DELL:

Agreed. iMacs are better compared with Notebooks on price. With the integrated screen, smaller components (i.e. SO-DIMM instead of DIMM, slim DVD), and a CPU that's a Laptop CPU in the PC world.

If they make a cheep Duo based Mini then I might consider picking up my first Mac. I have no need for the extra monitor built into the iMacs.

if you're not a freaking gamer macs are wonderful. I have a windows PC with a 2405 and an ibook and I have to say for general usage I prefer my ibook by a longshot (with 1.5gigs of ram, without that it sucked. Right now just idling with progs open I'm using almost a gig of ram).
