The new Apple iMac computers with Intel CPU's are now on sale.

20"LCD + 2.0Ghz dual core = $1699
17"LCD + 1.8Ghz dual core = $1299

A little expensive, but nice (like all apple products)

With Apple using Intel, will Dell use AMD? One can only hope.

Amazon also has them a few bucks cheaper.

Looks like they didn't lower prices any either. So now they get lots more profit from all the savings on less expensive standard parts and intel cpu

17" screen, 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive for $1300 just doesn't seem all that great to me.

What apple needs to do is become an OS company. TONS of people would buy the mac OS for normal windows machines. They could sell it by saying "turns ANY computer into a mac."

I mean they are basically admitting by moving to intel hardware that their special stuff wasn't all that good, and that they aren't a hardware company. So why not give in, admit they are a software company, and take a big chunk of market share from MS, and make oodles of money?

By switching to Intel, Apple is exposing even further their ridiculous price premiums over comparable PC's. With essentially nothing but the OS and outer shell differentiating a Mac from a PC now, the disparity is obvious.

$1300 for a computer with 512MB of RAM and a slow 8x DVDRW drive that only does 2.4x DL? Ridiculous, Core Duo or not.

I see that they are for sale, but I do not see them "on sale". I am anxiously awaiting the 17" MacBook Pro but I failed to see where this is a Hot Deal </thread crap>

Couldn't agree more. I'm a former mac user, but these days the "Mac Tax" is absurd and frankly I don't think the OS is any better than linux. Steve Jobs puts some kind of trance on people to open up their pocket books, though, so I'm sure plenty of these new intel macs will get sold...

Sweet! I don't own an Apple and I'm not all that enthusiastic about OS X (specifically, I don't find the UI "easy" or "intuitive") but this is cool. I wouldn't be surprised to see the prices come down. This is Apple. They don't "give them away" when they announce a new product.

Yeah, but they also tend not to lower prices a whole lot over the life of a product. Instead of keeping the same offerings at lower price levels, they tend to keep the same price points and just give the machines spec bumps.

The extra money is for OS X over Windows and the design and simplicity of the Mac concept. It's probably a little too much for what you're getting, but people will still pay it.

I still don't understand why they didn't move to AMD chips. They could have made their machines faster and more efficient than the PPCs and still differentiated themselves from the majority of OEM Windows PCs.

I was excited about the new MacBookPro (except i hate the name), but the price for those things are really high. $2000 for the 15", $2500 for the 17". Thats a lot for a laptop. Ugg. Looks like i'll be sticking with my powerbook for at least another year.

They had a chance with me if the prices were <$1000 like other Intel powered computers. Heck I can get an equivalent Dell or eMachine for <$300.

If Mac actually was more competitive with pricing i'd think more people would consider switching, but we definitly know now how much overpriced they are now because of the intel switch. In my opinion the only sales pitch is the nice white plastic and OS X. I like Devistater's opinion about having Apple a software company only, that's probably their only chance verses microsoft. Anyways..good heads up on the Intel Imacs wreckage!

The $2500 model still includes a 15" screen. Essentially, you're paying for the faster CPU, more RAM, and a larger hard disk.

I personally am trying to get one of the new Macbook Pros for my job. I support Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. With one of these, I could install all three on the same system and not have to lug two different notebooks around with me. Also, it is hard to find a Dell or Emachines system that is this powerful and weighs 5.5 lbs.

Disclaimer: I've never been a fan of Apple hardware but I've always like the notebook form factors. This is the first time I've said to myself "I'd really like to have one of those."

Remember guys, not everyone wants to race to the bottom when it comes to price. I think Dell has gotten themselves into trouble by selling PCs too cheaply.

I'm not an apple fan, but I do admire the way that everything works with them. They are able to control the hardware, and don't have to write drivers for every single .99 cent network card you can find on sale.

If they are able to sell computers and make a profit I say more power to them.

I hate to agree with Thread craps but it's true. Now I love Macs but this really isn't a hot deal. It seems like it should be in OT if anything IMO.

I fail to see the advantage of Intel over AMD in this case. Who cares? Is Apple going to save much? I doubt it... Now they can use the Intel brand to push Apple product. Seems like a good match to me and they need SSE3 (my old AMD64 3200+ doesn't have it -- I'd think the newer ones would so maybe this is a moot point).

I like AMD chips but if I was Apple I'd go with Intel.

the 'way better than any PC maker has ever thought up' industrial design is much of it. plus, i bet they don't have leaking caps after a year like PCs. apple just doesn't have the 'cut costs at every turn' mentality that the average PC maker has.

AMD can't offer a whole platform together. intel can. intel makes the processor, the chipsets, the motherboards, everything. intel has lots of experience at coming up with innovative industrial designs (which aren't adopted by PC makers because of their razor thin margins). AMD does not.
