Already done, they got the R5 boxed version of the 160gb up now for $1000 or the 80gb for a dirt cheap $600.

What a steal!

I have no idea how technology retailing works, maybe they're trying to clean out the pipeline of G1's before selling the new stuff at a normal price?

That is just plain old wrong.
Anyone know the most effective email address at Newegg to fire off complaints, and not get just an auto reply?

Well, I did email Newegg about the 80 gig G2 version. Mentioned that I was a long time customer and was not happy with the pricing strategy; this is the jist of the response:
"We are sorry but this item has been removed from our website. All Newegg pricing is determined collectively by our Marketing and Purchasing Departments. Every product we carry is listed on our website; pricing and availability are posted in real time. Please check all prices and availability at http://www.newegg.com/ for our most up-to-date status."

The item is now "de-activated". I ordered one from the Toshibadirect.com site,,,,waiting to see what that result will be.(nod to spufaru)

Just to throw my .02; I find NEWEGG no more worse than the people willing to buy these drives above MSRP. Essentially, they are both causing the price to skyrocket. It takes two to tango in this whole issue really.

I am hoping the prices on the 160GB version fall down within the next few months. From what I've seen of 80GB owners, they're starting to ration their space and putting apps on their external drives; something I find unacceptable considering you want anything program, OS, or likewise on the fast SSD drive for the full effect. The storage drive should where you archive your downloads and what-not, seems such a waste to off-load any program onto there if you have an Intel SSD considering how nice they are.

I ordered 2 160gb G2s from NCIX...I'm told they should ship around the 20th. I put 10% down payment, and since ordering the price has gone down a few dollars (which I get the benefit of). It was just a little over $500CAD a drive (and they have price matching if anyone finds a better deal in canada).

I was told that the initial shipment had almost completely been pre-ordered...might not be too late for someone else though to get in on their initial batch.

probably got tired of the bad press on their prices and said "fuckit, we'll deactivate until we get them in stock and can price them decently"

That or any one of the tens of thousands of millions out there got tired of their kid whining they needed one for their back-to-school laptop and were just happy they could buy one at any price and Newegg really did sell out of them.

When I bought my QX6700 in Nov 2006 (days after release) for $1500 from newegg I was simply elated that I could get one for any price versus having to wait another month or so for them to be in stock long-enough for me to snag one at a price closer to MSRP.

(mine went into a forex day-trading rig, the price delta was immaterial at those pricepoints as the rig was a money-generating investment)

I wish I could say the same for my ventures into fx

UPS should be delivering my slightly gouged $249 80gb G2 today, it's going into a machine I use to trade energy spreads.

FWIW I don't think Newegg sold out of these things at the ridiculous prices - they had a bunch of mislabeling issues too (calling the G2C1 retail vs. OEM) and retroactively changed my invoice from last Friday. Maybe I'll bitch and see if I can get a few bucks off.

Regarding pricing, I'm all for free market & caveat emptor. But if soccer mom or granny buys this for their school-bound kid at 2x MSRP it's probably a customer lost for life. Newegg, the second g is for gouge!

Awesome. Ordered! Never heard of tankguys but judging from their resellerratings and that you are an Elite, they must be good. Thanks for the tip.

TankGuys is one of the last "boutique" parts suppliers - you will be satisfied.

I see he has the 160GB now too.

I recall one time i ordered what i thought was a good video card, turned out to be a crap one with a similar name... i could swear they retroactively changed my invoice, but at the time i did not save them and had no way to prove it (even to myself)... nowadays i print everything to XML or pdf

Which doesn't make a lot of sense compared to selling the ones they have at a 'decent price' and then listing them OOS.

Keep checking back 0 I heard he's getting a few here and there. Supply is tight, but he's beating up his suppliers for more.

when installing/running certain things on the intel vs a spindle drive. i notice that certain "windows"/steps don't even SHOW UP on the intel. I simply do not see them, not even blinking in and out... while on a spindle drive they show up and i have to wait a while until they finish.

Hey since I'll be getting my g2 sometime in the next few hours, I got a couple questions:

-Can I install/use XP on it? (I know I can't use TRIM on XP... I use XP for some certain apps compatibility right now, planning to upgrade to 7 in the future)
-How do I enable AHCI? I run an AMD system on a 790GX mobo
edit: okay I found a bios option called On Chip Sata: and its set to Native IDE. I have the option to change it to AHCI.

I understand that its best to change only on a fresh drive. My question now is I have two HDs that were installed with that Native IDE setting active. I plan on using them as storage drives. So I will uninstall all drives. Install X25M with bios setting under AHCI. Install Windows to X25M. Reinstall two HDs... this is where I'm confused as to what will happen. Will these drives get f'd since they didn't start out under AHCI?

ty if you answer

AHCI/IDE only matters for the boot drive. It boils down to windows not activating the AHCI driver unless its needed, and if its not installed on AHCI its not needed. If you later toggle it to AHCI, the OS can't talk to the controller since the driver is present but disabled. Nothing special is needed for the storage drives.

On the other hand, my system seems to hang anytime my current SATA drive (Seagate 7200.12) is connected while in AHCI mode. To the point where it says "SATA 1...." and hangs. Doesn't hang with the optical, doesn't hang in IDE, doesn't hang if the drive is disconnected. Doesn't matter which port its connected to, it hangs on whichever it is. Can clear CMOS or go to bos defaults (in IDE) and it works fine. Change *nothing* but IDE->SATA mode and it'll hang. Ive got an older seagate Ill swap in (or live with just the 80GB) if I can't figure out the cause.
