On the other hand, my system seems to hang anytime my current SATA drive (Seagate 7200.12) is connected while in AHCI mode. To the point where it says "SATA 1...." and hangs. Doesn't hang with the optical, doesn't hang in IDE, doesn't hang if the drive is disconnected. Doesn't matter which port its connected to, it hangs on whichever it is. Can clear CMOS or go to bos defaults (in IDE) and it works fine. Change *nothing* but IDE->SATA mode and it'll hang. Ive got an older seagate Ill swap in (or live with just the 80GB) if I can't figure out the cause.

I thought AHCI was not for XP, have to use Vista or Win7 to use AHCI?

Oh yeah, I believe you'll get yours, wan't posting that quote to suggest otherwise, just posting so folks would know that source of G2's already dried up in a matter of hours.

You need AHCI and 7 to use TRIM, but my issue is before the OS is called, its strictly a POST issue. Oh, and Ive been on 7x64 RTM for a month. If I got as far as a BSoD Id be excstatic, as that would mean it'd POST.

-How do I enable AHCI? I run an AMD system on a 790GX mobo
edit: okay I found a bios option called On Chip Sata: and its set to Native IDE. I have the option to change it to AHCI.

I understand that its best to change only on a fresh drive. My question now is I have two HDs that were installed with that Native IDE setting active. I plan on using them as storage drives. So I will uninstall all drives. Install X25M with bios setting under AHCI. Install Windows to X25M. Reinstall two HDs... this is where I'm confused as to what will happen. Will these drives get f'd since they didn't start out under AHCI?

ty if you answer

it does not matter to the drives... just change it.
The only thing is, if you change from legacy to AHCI, then you have to reinstall (or fix) windows. So change to AHCI, reinstall windows, and you are good to go, no need to do anything fancy with existing drives.

Although I would recommend unplugging all drives but one when installing windows. Windows is really stupid about where it puts its boot stuff and it can put it on the wrong drive and screw you in the future

mine is just sitting in the case... sideways. It is small, it is light, and it is 100% sealed and it has no moving parts

Can't believe that I was finally able to get 5 of the 80gig 2nd gen SSDs for prices varying from 225 to 250 with one to a customer limits from Newegg, Mwave and Puget. My wife and I were busy shoppers. Newegg and Mwave did not build their reps by overcharging but that is what they are now doing and turning off a lot of folks. Mwave now 300 and Newegg at 350.

Now I have to spend the holiday weekend installing Win 7 and apps on 5 computers but I will have fun

Get em while they last

OR..........................

5 Each UPS/FedExGd (unit price = $284.09)

What kind of quantity discount is that?

in the vast majority of stores buying in bulk is MORE expensive... stores realized that people just buy in bulk without checking the price ASSUMING it is cheaper. Any grocer, from walmart to kroger does that. Take a look at the prices sometimes for exact identical items in different sized containers.

When you have to stop and figure unit price that works in pennies, I can see most people assuming bulk=cheaper but when the unit price is out in front with a 35.00 difference that's pretty much a no-brainer.

I dunno about you but it's hard to believe this isn't a pricing mistake unless they want to discourage bulk sales and I have no idea why they would want to do that.

6 ounce tuna can. 1.09$
12 ounce can of exact same brand and flavor. 3.29$

Same with tomato paste, and many others...

Yea, often they mix up dollars per pound, dollars per ounce, cents per pound, cents per ounce, and dollars per item. But many items are clearly labeled in the same measurement scale.

I love when they do this because it is just so cheesy awful obvious they are trying to be slick-willie about it to add one more barrier to the analyses process of their customers.

When you reduce yourself to waging war with your customer you're acknowledging that you've already failed at running the original business (selling groceries, gas, etc) and you've now entered into a new business called "how to scam your customers without them knowing it".

which, of course, assumes the customers are REALLY REALLY DUMB.
The things I have heard marketing guys say... "oh they will never figure it out" "but, there is a huge yahoo group, it has 90% of our customers" "pfft, you worry too much, customers are dumb"... guess what. THEY FIGURED IT OUT!

no... thats not entirely true, they are assuming the customer has better things to do than convert dollars per pound to cents per ounces for every damn item on the shelf.

Pfft, it's an obvious metaphor for cars you silly goose, and thus by automatic extension represent an analogy to computer components.

Don't tell me you didn't know that comments like "which is cheaper per ton, elbow macaroni or squiggly macaroni?" was code for "should I buy the vertex or stick with an Intel SSD?"!

(my apologies for the south park silly goose reference, too much late nite on comedy central for me lately)

damn it took a bit but i'm finally up and running!

i didn't know about this drive alignment thing but i finally got it done. set to 128 sectors (64kb) offset, 4096 allocation size. guide here: http://www.ocztechnologyforum....showthread.php?t=48309

quick write-up of what i did to align (after unsuccessfully loaded up a portion of windows xp install on the drive): use mbrwizard to erase first head of drive using /wipe=head command. deleted partition. used diskpar and set sectors like in the guide. formatted to ntfs with 4096 allocation size. installed windows xp, in installed did another ntfs quick format.

and bada boom bada bing!

i ended up sticking with IDE not AHCI since i don't want to deal with the hassle of slipstreaming AHCI drivers into my XP install cd.

what tweaks do you guys use for the drive? i've disabled prefetching and indexing service, Stop Windows from relocating files required for quicker/faster booting to the front of the disk (improving boot times) ? HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction\Enable="N" (copy and pasted), Stop Windows from relocating commonly-used files to sectors closer to the front of the disk (improving launch times) ? SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout\EnableAutoLayout=dword:00000000.

there seems to be a lot more. so many it's making my head spin!

also, am i really going to miss using AHCI? i plan to use it when i install windows 7 in the future
