I've gone to win7 and it's great actually. Took a bit of getting used to. I definitely notice the difference with AHCI actually, it's pretty significant imo. I installed the 32-bit version and I've got pretty much none of the compatibility issues so far.

i recommend 64bit even if you don't go above 4GB of ram. it allows your CPU to use extended registers. Which has up to 400-500% theoretical speed increase. While it is not guarenteed, hash calculations are benchmarked to be 300-400% faster, and file compression like 7z is 23% faster... both figures are from getting the exact same computer running a 64bit OS to run a 32bit exe vs the 64bit exe.

Hmm... I do require my rig though for video editing. Right now I know everything works well with 32-bit. I've read about the 64-bit version having some stability issues so I don't want to run into that.

But I'd be willing to go to 64-bit OS I could run the 32-bit app in it since I know the 32-bit app works perfectly. Would this be sub-optimal?

I now know of more apps/drivers that are 64bit only than 32bit only. Since more and more add support for 64bit, and some rare new programs come out without support for 32bit.

and quite frankly, I didn't have much problem with that even years ago when i just switched... in 2005.

wrong on both counts.
1. Windows 7 defrag WILL NOT defrag SSD drive drives, it automatically identifies them and excludes them. I have an intel G2 and I looked at it, it only defrags my spindle drive
2. Super Fetch greatly improves performance, you want it on.

Win7 is supposed to disable defrag if it recognizes the drive as an SSD but I've read many say it didn't work for them. Just check to make sure it did.

Superfetch is a YMMV. I disabled it on spindle drives and I disable it on SSDs.

alcohol120 added 64 bit support in feb of 2006... granted that was almost a year after 64bit first hit the market. But it is also 4, almost 5 years in the past.
I don't know when earthview added 64bit support, but they have it right now.

As i said, today, in 9-8-2009. I know several 64bit only programs, only 32bit only program i know is sandboxie. And I can live without it for the performance boost.

the ONLY possible reason for a program not to be support is if it relies on a custom "driver" for its operation, and that driver has not been ported to 64bit. things that emulate hardware or modify core operating system operation are the only programs that fall into that category. of which sandboxie is the only holdout.

Old hippie, you just admitted that the last time you even TRIED 64bit was in 2005 and that you haven't bothered with it since... Considering I have been using 64bit XP, vista, win7, and solaris... and have been with it since 2005 through today in 2009, I would say i know quite a bit more about it and what is "incompatible" than you do..

I wouldn't expect any program made before 2005 to be 64bit compatible, i would get the latest version. If you regularly run 5 year old software than sure, stick with windows XP.

they're actually rated at 70MB. 90MB/s is awesome.

I can't belief they are still $350 at newegg. I wonder when they will be stocked elsewhere. Looks like WD is trying to fight back with the dual actuator 2TB. It's pretty bloody fast sustained xfer. I might have to get a few of those one they drop under $200. They might as well call them TRex as they will eat raptops for lunch and being over 6x as big. Review at PCperf.

Also anyone have any pic of what the retail 3.5" adapter from intel looks like? I opened up a few old hdd and found one can kinda hold 2.5chers ok. But an adapter would be nice too.

It's basically this flat piece of metal with sides that go up. Four holes on the base to screw the SSD into. Then the sides have the standard HD mounting holes.

Where's this review at? I only see a french site...
