LOL, Well the purpose of benching it is as follows:
1. Know that is working as expected.
2. Over time, I'd like to re-bench it to check before and after and ensure it's working as expected.

Managed to snag the last available generation 2 160GB retail Intel drive at www.shopblt.com. Got my shipping confirmation, now the drives are unavailable at that site.

Can't wait to try it out...

Will also add that this e-tailer had the drive shipped out and on its way to me this afternoon (I ordered just before putting up the info two posts above), and that it has excellent ratings on resellerratings.com. Certainly a viable alternative to Newegg.

Thanks for the heads up. They still have the 80GB versions: http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin...00U0123_BBC4878P.shtml.

Pretty awesome price right now if anyone's looking to pick one of these babies up. ZZF has the 80 in stock as well but for $300.

A lot of them have them in stock now huh. Is this worth buying for my old s939 and I plan on upgrading within the next year or 2.

crystaldiskmark

AS SSD is better, has a 64 thread test that makes the x25 shine with ahci on.

Yeah I agree, AS SSD is a great bench.

I'd say most definately! I have an old 939 system and I got a Supertalent (Indilinx base controller) drive a month ago and it's given my system new life. If anything, older systems benefit even more from SSD's because waiting for a slow disk is even more painful on a slower system. When my system was new, I used to load first in all the games I played and over time I dropped to the middle and then to one of the last. Now I'm always one of the first 10 people to load again on the same exact system.

Seriously WTF is wrong with Intel? I mean these were shipping a month ago and they discovered that issue and we have been delayed for more than a whole month. When are these guys going to actually launch this product? With a delay this long I suspect some other issue like they want to wait for their costs to go down. As it stands I think the G2 launch was a **** tease.

Just because newegg still has their prices high doesn't mean the product isn't out... If you read the thread you can find places where you can periodically find them in stock for good prices ($250 for 80gb). I suspect by the end of next week that they will be in stock at multiple places for a decent price.

....they definitely dropped the ball with the firmware initially, but if you don't have one by now then you probably just don't want one bad enough.

"periodically"

That word doesn't exactly describe a good supply situation. I'm just too busy at work to keep checking. I keep checking every now and then and I personally have never seen it in stock.

Anyway, I hope you are right that by next week I can buy them.

I got similar numbers when I first installed OS... But after installing everything else I now have 50GB free in my 160GB and my results are as follows.

--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------

Sequential Read : 225.500 MB/s
Sequential Write : 73.916 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 170.077 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 61.914 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 20.681 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 31.728 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB
Date : 2009/09/13 22:10:11

Although, it has decreased in performance... I must say that I'm extremely happy... ufff, I can't even compare it to my old Raptor...

I copy/pasted the same file onto my desktop until I had 8MB (yeah, MB) remaining on the drive. Then erased and emptied the recycle bin. Then I got these numbers:
--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------

Sequential Read : 256.417 MB/s
Sequential Write : 82.761 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 203.017 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 61.490 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 22.753 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 46.243 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB
Date : 2009/09/13 22:39:24

Definitely slower writes than when new, but still decent numbers.

Yes... a bit slower..

Looks like my drive is slower than yours... I wonder why ? Did you set AHCI in your BIOS setting ?

My drive is significantly slower vs new compared with yours. Yours is slower but not by much... Maybe when Win 7 is out and TRIM is supported it will restore itself ?

Note: I bought MOBO about 2 years ago and never updated chipset driver. I'll be updating chipset driver when I get home and see if this makes a difference. Also, I don't believe I have AHCI available in my MOBO

yeah, mine is with AHCI on.
I've got a drive that freezes during POST detection if set to AHCI (its my previous boot drive and would be a storage drive) so I may format and go back to IDE mode, would update numbers if I do that.

OK,

So I updated NVIDIA NFORCE driver and this is the results:

--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------

Sequential Read : 242.445 MB/s
Sequential Write : 64.518 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 203.861 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 61.641 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 20.170 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 32.583 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB
Date : 2009/09/14 15:53:29

I ran the test twice and it gave same numbers. Looks like there was some improvments in my sequential reads and random read of 512K. When I run with 500MB instead of 100MB I get very similar results except my Seq write increases to 79.34 vs 64.518.

When I ran test yesterday, I remember running a couple of apps in the background (like skype, MSN & a couple of IE's), so I don't feel 100% confident that updating NFORCE Driver made a difference... but these apps don't take up much CPU so it may have been the difference.

Anyways, it's a bit better.

Newegg can go to hell with their price gouging and SKU changing (to remove bad comments about their pricing practices).

It's sad when the prices on ebay rape you less than on a major etailer's website. I do shop at Newegg regularly, but this whole fiasco has made me rethink that...

What is it that determines price gouging as compared to simple supply and demand??? I just bought a hard drive at the egg (spinner) and did not give it a second thought. Is that becasue I was not truly in the market for an Intel? Heck, at least not until the price settles down and maybe I see the next round of competition
