I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I wonder... when a firmware that enables the TRIM command is finally released, will it "TRIM" the whole drive immediately as a sort of "priming of the pump" action, or will the cells that have already been written to remain in an "unknown" state until they are explicitly sent the command? Does it even make a difference?

Not sure if anyone care. I've noticed that Windows 7 enables hibernation by default. What a big waste of space especially if you have a lot of RAM and don't use hibernation. If you want to turn it off, open up the Command Prompt by typing cmd. At the Command Prompt, type powercfg -h off. If you want to enable it again, just type in on at the end instead of off.

Good to know, thanks!

I just found this article by Microsoft about disabling/enabling Hibernation and there is no mention of Windows 7 Home Premium, but some other versions. Are you sure Hibernation is on by default in Windows 7 Home Premium?

There is also this way to disable Hibernation from that link I provided above:

"Hibernation is made unavailable when you set the value of the Hibernate after setting to Never by using the Power Options item in Control Panel."

What I meant by enabled by default is that the c:\hiberfil.sys exist.

No, that option only disable hibernation but it doesn't remove the c:\hiberfil.sys file. You can easily confirm it by using the Command Prompt again. Type in dir /a:h c:\hiberfil.sys. You will see the file if you used the powercfg -h on command.

FYI, Amazon has the RETAIL drives (come with 2.5 to 3.5 bracket) in stock for $244.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer...?ie=UTF8&condition=new

That did not last long. Showing $329 for me now.

Actually, although Amazon shows $329 now, click on the "3 new for $244.10" link below the higher price, and you can still get it from Amazon.com for $244. At least for now. Go figure.

Why would the file be of any importance if Hibernation is disabled?

Microsoft decided to pre-allocate the space whether you will use hibernation or not. I have 12GB of RAM. I don't need a 10GB hibernation file that i don't use taking up my precious SSD space.

the hibernation file has reserved space for hiberation.
i would not disable it, sleep mode now prepares a hibernation copy to be restored in case of power loss during sleep mode(it is discarded if nothing happens). it is a very cool feature, and its not that much space anyways

Not much space? What about zuffy's statement saying 10GB:

"Microsoft decided to pre-allocate the space whether you will use hibernation or not. I have 12GB of RAM. I don't need a 10GB hibernation file that i don't use taking up my precious SSD space."

I guess he is saying even with Hibernation disabled, the file is using 10GB of space regardless, something I don't quite understand.

I don't use sleep or hibernation in my desktops so disabling it is fine with me. As for laptop, I would definitely leave it on because hibernation is the way to go.

But the file will still be available even with your command as you can enable it. I still don't understand why there would be 10GB of space when Hibernation is disabled--the file will be there to enable even with your command.

Why would the file be of any importance if Hibernation is disabled?

Sorry, I somehow messed up on my reply that should be this:

I have 8GB of RAM but that is not the issue because I have a UPS to shut down when power goes out. I never use the sleep mode, nor do I need Hibernation.

If you go thru the gui to disable hibernation per your link suggestion, the hiberfil.sys will still exist. That is why you need to use the powercfg -h off command.

UPS does not shut down your PC,it hibernates it... it SAYS shut down, but it hibernates (both APC and Cyberpower do so)
Did you try disabling hibernate AND sleep and any program that hibernates (aka, ups)?

I have only 4GB of ram on my laptop but I also used the cmd line disable to get rid of the hibernation file. Was reserving just over 3GB of space and it took a reboot to clear it off.

Everyone has different needs, and it can be a good idea for many to disable it. Maybe not everyone but it was for me. In my case I run dual boot OS X/Win7 and only set a 50GB partition for occasional gaming ... so 3GB is a lot to me. And I never, ever put Win7 to sleep on a Macbook Pro ... rather just shut down.
