I'm going to assume anand will write the article with the old firmware since the only change is a bios bug.
He's had the drive for what, nearly 3 weeks?

Where are the new firmwares already?

Odd that when looking for firmware to download, Intel's site makes no distinction between G1 and G2, and the G1 firmware download disappeared today, it now says
Your search for Intel® X25-M Solid State Drive, 80GB SATA II 2.5in, MLC, High Performance
currently does not have any software downloads available.

gluglglug, its possibly that the if the g1/g2 firmwares are listed in the same place and the g1 firmware disappeared that means they are about to put a new firmware up (but this is just speculation on my part, could be all kinds of reasons why it disappeared).

G1 still there

looks like it's a revised one. can't find my original download to compare...

The original had a much lower ID (somewhere in the 3000-3199 range for both 80 & 160GB), and was dated 05/01, with a filename suggesting it was really built on 04/09.

Also, when you extract the flasher itself from the ISO, the old one is 371KB while the new one is 629KB. I think they put both versions in the .exe and it auto-detects your drive and uses the appropriate version for it.

Release notes say that there is no real update for 50nm

Update: tried the latest flasher, it says my G1 drive is already up to date.

Out of morbid curiosity I took a look at the flasher in a hex editor.

It appears to contain 4 versions of the firmware, 128KB each, with a bunch of code at the beginning for the app itself. Guessing its one version for each of G1 80GB, G2 80GB, G1 160GB and G2 160GB.

Did a few G2s actually get sold to customers or did Intel caught it fast enough? I'm just guessing that if they caught it all they won't release the G2 f/w till the drives actually hit the stores and Newegg is showing 8/28.

Flashed the G2 to the latest version. Nothing changed on the performance side (my writes speeds are temporarily sucking because of some crazy fragmentation from moving 50000 files back and forth), and I expected nothing to change.

fraeone and DukeN, with the new firmware out I would suspect retailers will have them within the next week or so (really want the drive so I can setup windows 7). Just depends on when intel actually finished the firmware and started flashing the drives (or how fast they are making new drives with the firmware) so the first few shipments can go out. Personally I would be happy with a drive with the fist firmware as its easy enough to update and since I would use it with my desktop I wouldn't bother with a bios password anyway.

I had some gift certs for amazon, so I ordered one. 1-4 week shipping time, I expect they'll go out roughly the same time as newegg ships.

I'm going out of my mind waiting for the G2, been clicking every few hours on Newegg like a degenerate (yeah I know you can set up an email).

Anyone know if Newegg is conservative on their ETA dates, and are there any other retailers besides Amazon worth checking?

actually it takes exactly the same amount of time to boil than if you don't watch it.

Even though I'm on autonotify, I still check Zipzoomfly and Puget Systems daily along with Amazon and Newegg. Puget was one of the first sites to mention Intel's request to hold delivery due to the BIOS issue back on July 24th. We have the firmware fix Intel, now where are these drives?

Whoa, whoa! Let's not be too hasty using words like exactly! Regardless of how you watch the pot, there will likely be tiny -- perhaps even currently imperceptible -- changes in the time required. Measurement always impacts the outcome of an experiment!

you make a good point, your presence near it will slightly increase the air temperature, resulting in slight change in the amount of time.
