very nice review from anand, as always.
Basically the G3 drives will need 4 improvements: price (of course), power gates (for less usage esp. at idle), 6Gbps (for improved reads), and a high limit on seq writes (since it seems/is artificially limited, and sometimes it matters).

/me doesn't cancel his G2 order.

I would suspect general availability sometime before windows 7 releases to retail (then maybe 1-2 weeks where availability is down, followed by availability again until the holiday buying season hits full gear). A lot of the buying now is people who wanted to buy at release but were stuck because of the firmware issue, considering the price of the drives and the state of the economy its unlikely that this level will be maintained for long, in a few weeks it should subside as everyoen who wanted one at release gets one, then when 7 is out demand will jump for a little while then ...

Above is all speculation (I have no inside information), but based on prior releases (other fast/large drives, processors...) it seems likely that this will follow a similar pattern.

Wtf almost doubled in price in the last couple of days.
Anand you should really stop posting prices from newegg, seems like they're using some kind of automatic price gouging script.

Haha... I was JUST about to post a "holy price gouge Batman!!" They must have a lot of G1's that need to be moved... but come on, that price is just plain stupid for the differences between the newer and older drive.

Oh and...

$899.00 for the 160gb drive. Newegg... you have stones...

Hahahaha, makes me glad I got my 160GB Gen2 for $400 after bing cashback. You guys should have done the same when you had the chance. I did make a post that buy.com was selling those on ebay at MSRP in this very same thread, did anybody else besides me jump on that deal?

I KNEW this was going to happen, because they did the same thing when I bought my GSkill Titan, which at the time was real hot because it supposedly fixed all the JMicron problems and was the first dual controller drive to do so(again, supposedly....). I got one early and paid like $289.99, went out of stock right after I bought mine, and when they came back in stock the price was like $350... That is a little steep for a hot product, but expected when demand is high, but man Newegg has reached a new low with this round of pricing for these drives. It is so absurd, that it's actually kind of funny to me. To think, like many others, I have been waiting for the G2 160gb drive to come it, with the intent to purchase... oh well, sux to be you newegg.

Realisticlly, they could jack up the price $30-40 and just call it gravy, and people(not me) would still buy these drives... but come one, double the price... who is that stupid...?

if people are willing to PAY those prices, why in the world should they not sell at them?
I do not fault them at the least for doing so. Actually this is better, by pricing them that high they remain in stock longer, allowing people to purchase them for much mullah instead of dealing with some shady character who bought one only to sell on ebay...
oh, that too, they PREVENT the "buy and sell on ebay" thing. where the vast majority of new consoles are bought by people who plan to sell them on ebay, which hurts real consumers who can't find them in the store since every opportunistic bastard is standing in line. If the store raises the price ahead of time everyone wins.

Already done, they got the R5 boxed version of the 160gb up now for $1000 or the 80gb for a dirt cheap $600.

What a steal!

I have no idea how technology retailing works, maybe they're trying to clean out the pipeline of G1's before selling the new stuff at a normal price?

mmmm.... if only they listed current stock amounts... are they actually selling them at those prices? or is their auto-gouge buggy?

I sure hope it's a bug, because there is really no call for a price increase of that much. NO ONE is dumb enough to pay that much for the new drive, well unless you're a complete idiot with more money than sense...

That is just plain old wrong.
Anyone know the most effective email address at Newegg to fire off complaints, and not get just an auto reply?

I know that Newegg is just trying to make as much as they can from what is currently a limited resource, but I am sure that Intel cannot be happy about this price gouging. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts.

1. they dropped the free shipping.
2. they are charging 100$ extra for the RETAIL version which adds a mounting bracket compared to the version without the mounting bracket.
