Hello, I just got an iphone 4 for christmas and it's my first smartphone. I needed a new phone and since my 80gb ipod(lasted me like 5+ years) finalls died I though why not. I know this isnt the best phone but regardless, it will suffice.

Anyways, since im new to the whole "smartphone" thing, I though what better to do than ask people about what I should do with my new phone.

I haven't a clue what I should do with a stock iphone, what apps to delete, what settings to change or really anything about the phone.

any tips and tricks and common sense with smartphones would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

OH man the first experience with a smartphone is killer!

There is so much to do that I can't even fathom on how to explain to a noob.

Just go wild with the market and see for yourself!

First off, reorganize your music and save some room. You are coming from an 80GB iPod, so my first bit of advice is to organize your music and then when you put your music on, save some space. I'd leave at least 1GB free, but maybe 2GB. The camera and video camera on an iPhone 4 are both decent but you need free space to use them. Also apps - particularly games - are large as well. So... save some room and only fill up ~10GB with music.

Set up a good charging place. The biggest problem with smartphones is that the battery life is ~1 day. You can mess around with data and other settings and get 2-3 days out of it by making it less of a "smartphone" but regardless, you will need to charge frequently. My phone is my alarm clock and I put it on the charger on my nightstand every night without fail. I would recommend you do something that gets you into the habit of never forgetting to charge it daily.

Third, check the thread at the top of this forum about best apps and load up on apps. Whatever your hobbies are, there are apps for them. Stick to the free ones until you find something you really want that you can't get for free.

Definitely read through other's lists of must-have apps for iOS. Fun things to try right off are some of the alternative camera apps like instagram. Check the App store's featured and top 25 lists for free and paid apps to get an idea of what's available and what you're interested in. Above all: Welcome to the 21st century!

Yeah... iTunes. Quite possibly my least favorite thing about iPhones... that and the dropped calls.

I would recommend completely uninstalling iTunes and then install 10.5.2.

use copytrans manager to put music on your phone. Foobar2000 has ipod manager but no 4S support just yet.

I wouldn't install itunes on windows. Going to run an OSX partition in the near future though, where itunes supposedly works way better.

Not sure, the copytrans people have an auto installer that installs apple mobile device support and apple application support to a windows pc, which enables transferring files to the phone (or any ipod). And I just got my 4S a few days ago, it came with ios 5.0.1 so haven't done any updates. Wouldn't surprise me if itunes was needed though. I've been planning on my hackintosh install for a while now anyway!

Yes. And it sucks! The only time I use iTunes is when I do system updates and jailbreak for iOS devices. I try to avoid iTunes if all at possible. I spent like 2 hours yesterday trying to update one of my Apple TV2 to the latest firmware version. The firmware update must have failed at least 10 times before it was finally successful. What should have been 10 minute update turned into 2+ hours of frustration and swearing session. People say Samsung firmware update/flasher Odin is bad, buggy, and prone to failure. Obviously they haven't experienced the pain of iTunes.

Not sure where you live, but you have a min of 14days to return/exchange device without any penalties. At this point in time I prefer Android OS for mobile phone. But even WP7, WM6.5 has less limitations than the iSheep's OS and having to use iTunes.

Um, you're not that familiar with iOS then, you don't need iTunes to do system updates on phones. I never use iTunes.

well I tried all yesterday and today to fix this issue and it just isn't working. I have literally tried EVERYTHING and short of a complete reinstall of windows 7, I do not think I can fix this.

I guess Im taking it back and getting an s2/nexus ;S

If you tap the spacebar twice, it'll insert a period.

There's tons of hidden stuff in iOS, but it'll come together over time.
