Interesting comparison. I feel like the interior of the outback is a decent upgrade from the forester, but I realize that is pretty subjective. It also seemed to me like the act seat had more room in the outback ( I could see how the slightly shorter greenhouse could make it "feel" more cramped though. Also, doesn't the outback get slightly better gas mileage?

I'm more of a wagon guy, so looks wise I like the outback a lot more than than the forester. That being said, I wouldn't be buying either of them if looks were high on my list.

Yes, the Outback does have a nicer interior than the Forester. The Forester is very spare. The Outback is...less sparse, haha. Looks like it has a bit more of design thought that went into the Outback. The Outback is a couple inches wider & about eight inches longer, but the Forester is taller. The Outback does have about five more cubic feet inside, so it's possible that the back seats are more roomy because of that (size-wise you get an inch more in the back seats):

http://www.planetsubaru.com/forester-vs--outback.htm

I was never really into wagons, but my buddy got a WRX wagon a number of years ago that was pretty neat, then I leased a Kia Soul (basically a half-wagon), got a second one, and then upgraded to a Forester. Technically a CUV, I guess. They all look like station wagons to me

I have 3 concerns with the Renegade:

1. First-year model
2. By Jeep
3. Made in Italy with a Fiat engine
4. With a 9-speed transmission that has a history of issues

I've read some horror stories. A couple here:

Stuck in park

5 issues so far & more on that

But I also realize there's always lemons with anything, especially new machines, and a lot of people have said they haven't had any issues. I could always go with another Soul (no AWD/4WD though), as both of mine were super-reliable, but the Jeep is kind of neat & I could do a little off-roading and have fun in the snow.

Used Honda Element?

I thought about it, but they stopped making them in 2011...would rather have something with ongoing support. My buddy has one & it's pretty nice, you can basically hose it out, which is awesome, and it's great for camping thanks to the way you can setup the interior. I had looked at them a few years ago, but the price difference between the Element & the Soul was $8 or $10k back then, so I went with a Soul at the time.

I stopped on my way home & took the 2.4L auto 4x4 out for a spin. Thoughts:

Cons:
1. C-pillars are ridiculously bad. Just terrible visibility. Fortunately they put in enormous side-view mirrors, so that helps make it up for it a lot.
2. There is an extremely long delay in acceleration, when you want to goose it. Feels like a full 3 seconds. My base-model Civic is somewhat slow & I kind of have to plan ahead to pass, go up a hill, or merge on the highway, but the Jeep feels twice as long as this. I suppose you could get used to it, but it's really noticeable. It has enough punch to go though.
3. I didn't get to take it out on the highway (rush hour traffic near the dealership), but it seemed a little wiggle when I gave it the gas. Not like torque steer, but more like a small whole-body shimmy. It was strange.

Pros:
1. Great frontal visibility
2. Better-than-expected prices. I took out a well-equipped automatic 4x4 and they offered $24k. The 4x4 2.4L auto on the website starts at $26k base & about $29k for what I wanted, so I was really happy with their pricing, especially since even Truecar was $27.3k.
3. Nice roominess, felt even bigger than a Kia Soul
4. Has some sort of automatic adjusting suspension. Worked REALLY well. I took it over some crummy backroads I had been on before that jittered my teeth in the Soul & it was surprisingly smooth. It's a good 600+ pounds more than the Soul too, so that helps. Also going up steep/bumpy driveways was flawless.
5. Steering was great for electric. The Soul felt a bit like a video game, kind of disconnected, but they put in a good steering feel to the wheel. Feels really solid.
6. Sunvisor extenders. A small thing, but one of my favorite features.

$24k still seems too expensive for what it is, but then again, it's an AWD/4WD system that gets an advertised 29 MPG on the highway & is easy to park, which is really nice. I was really happy with the size. It basically feels like a better Kia Soul.

As far as competitors...I checked out an Impreza wagon awhile back, not too bad but felt pretty low to the ground. Not a fan of the Crosstrek myself. My wife has a Forester, which is pretty nice, but I was actually a lot more comfortable in the Jeep. Truecar says I can get a base Forester for $23.5k or a base Outback for $25.3. The Outback adds a lot of rear storage capability, which would be awesome, although it's bigger than I like. But the resale would be better than the Jeep, as well as the reliability. Plus, optional EyeSight for radar cruise, which is just the best feature ever.

I like the interior of the renegade and the exterior isn't that bad either. That said, I would probably stay away from the renegade due to the terrible 9-speed transmission in it. They still haven't seemed to figure out a way to prevent all the failures these units are having.

There are two brands of vehicle I will avoid at all cost. VW (you can include Audi since they're pretty much the same vehicles) and Jeep.

I would avoid any chrysler products like the plague. they are the absolute worst when compared to other vehicles i've driven in the rental lots. Ford is usually leaps and bounds better than any other american product.

the chrysler 200 i drove was so bad. I have no idea how they can make a car with the sensation where you press the gas pedal and not have the engine respond until nearly a second later. and i'm not talking about lack of power from the engine (which there was, but this wasn't that type of sensation.. the car doesnt rev, or do anything), but this felt like more of a computer input lag or something like that.

That's exactly how the Renegade felt - huge delay in engine response. The engine itself has plenty of power, but the electronic throttle control introduced what felt like a turbo lag. Aside from the ridiculous C-pillar blind spots, that was really my only complaint. I'll have to stop by the dealership again when the highways aren't bumper-to-bumper to see if it's something I can get used to or not.

I had a New Beetle at one point & pretty much anything not bolted to the frame broke. Thank goodness it was on lease :whiste:

I have no experience with Jeep (or Fiat) products other than reputation, which is not very good, especially with the 9-speed transmissions. But now that I've checked out the Renegade in person, I do like it quite a bit...quirky design, lots of features for the price, etc. They are aggressive on pricing & financing, perhaps due to low sales & reputation, and the model I'm eyeballing was pretty feature-packed for the price, so I'm stuck between the bad reputation & liking the car. But all of the other ones I've looked at are kind of the same...CX-5/Tucson/Rogue/Forester/etc. imo the Forester is a better car, but I think the Jeep is more fun, and for a grand more than the Forester base model I can get like 10x the features in terms of bells & whistles on the Jeep, so that's pretty nice.

You're right. Make that three vehicles I would never buy in a million years:

VW/Audi
Jeep
Chrysler

Enjoyed the Fiat Spider that I owned. True, it wasn't reliable in the same way as the Miata that I later owned ... Nonetheless, the Spider had a character that appealed to me.

Life is too short to drive boring cars...

Unless you drive 300 miles a week just commuting. Then it's okay to drive boring cars that get great gas mileage.

Haha right?

I took one out for another test-drive on the highway tonight. I was REALLY impressed with the suspension...night & day difference from my Soul. Somehow even more solid-feeling than my wife's Forester. They had a green one on the lot I liked, so we started talking numbers, and they got super aggressive on pricing, so I bit. Very happy with the price & features. Picking it up Saturday

3 weeks ago the wife and I purchased a 2015 Renegade Latitude 4x4. So far we love it! Last weekend I drove down to Las Vegas from Salt Lake City with the cruise control set to a few above speed limit most of the way (around 83-84 through Utah) and pulled a trip average of 27.3mpg by fillup, computer read 27.1.

It's a quirky car, but it's fun and we like it a lot. Room enough for a couple car seats and luggage for the family. Plenty of power, and surprisingly that pedal lag took a day to get used to and since then I hardly notice it.

Fit and finish is great. No squeaks, noises, or concerns with any fabrics or plastics and I don't see any reason you expect otherwise in the foreseeable future.

Anyway, I hope a little feedback from an owner is a little helpful for you.

Awesome, thanks for the positive review! I got a Latitude too, what color did you go with?

Yeah, on the second test-drive, I got used to the pedal pretty quickly. Once you figure out how the 9-speed shifts & where it holds the acceleration, you can modulate your foot appropriately - it's just weird to get used to, I had to adjust to my wife's CVT for the first week too. I think it would be awesome with a standard 5-speed transmission, but I guess the 9-speed is how you get the nice gas mileage with the AWD model.

I almost went with the Renegade Trailhawk model because I like the smaller front lip & the Anvil Blue color that only comes on the Trailhawk, but it was an extra few hundred pounds & they didn't have any in stock at the dealership, and I wasn't particularly hung up on it. I ended up with a green one (ugly car, ugly color, had to get the combo! haha) - they cut me what I feel was a pretty good deal & it had even more stuff than I wanted in it. Ultimately, 4x4 with 29MPG sounded pretty dang good to me!

Or have decided you have better things to d than look after a car. I have so many things I'd rather be doing these days than fixing a car (on my own or hassle with a mechanic). I just want my vehicle to drive with regular maintenance.

I'm very ready for electrical cars to become a more practical solution. I imagine that a simple electric car will be exceedingly reliable.

I'm pretty sure when I get older and my kids head off for college I may want a 3rd car to wrench on and enjoy...but I'm not there at this point in my life.

Put me in the same boat that won't touch Jeep. I had a 2014 Grand Cherokee with severe electrical issues (among other smaller things) and was glad to be rid of it. It's actually sad because when it worked it was a great vehicle. Great in the snow, well designed interior and features, but it was just so unreliable even within 2 years of having it. Add on to that just abysmal customer service and I won't make that mistake again.

When we bought our 4Runner, I was REALLY tempted to buy the GC. Looks better (to my eye), drives way better, and had newer tech inside. I just couldn't get past the empirical and anecdotal evidence that Jeep reliability is bad. I've had a number of friends and relatives who have had GC's or Cherokees over the years and all of them have had lots of issues. I kept thinking that since this latest entry was based on a Daimler design, maybe it would be different. Glad I stayed away. We have already put 50K miles on our 2013 4Runner and it still feels like new and with zero problems/trips to the dealer. Granted, I don't expect anything less from a modern car...but from anecdotal stories from friends/neighbors...my car has far outperformed recent GC's.

Yeah, I got a Highlander when I traded in the Jeep. Pretty nice, though there's some fit & finish issues w/ Toyota sometimes as well. At least it's built right under the hood though.

I've owned a Chrysler/Jeep vehicle for maybe over 20 years or so. Let's see a Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler Sebring, 300M, 300S, and now a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The interior is just as nice as my 300S. The longest one I kept was the Chrysler 300M for 12 years. The biggest issue was probably a bad heater core in the 300M, but it was covered under warranty.

I guess I've been lucky. If the Renegade would have been available last year, who knows, I may have chosen it over the Cherokee. It looks like it would be a fun car to drive around. The transmission on the Cherokee isn't as bad as everyone makes it sound. Maybe all the years I've driven a Chrysler has "conditioned" the way I drive. Anyways, I'm loving my Jeep and so far, so good.
